Yep. Congrats Marty :-)

Maybe you could try rebuilding the two Daytons you have already, before spending more on something you might not need. Its an easy build. I think a measuring mic is a very good idea to go along with the mini DSP.

@ trepidation

If you dont care about the really low end stuff you can build a much smaller vented box than 11cft and still gain a lot of SPL compared to sealed. 6 cft. is enough for a 19Hz box that is just as loud as the one you modeled and still has a lot more low end.

This model is of two 18" Daytons in 6 cft each and is at factory rated excursion. Peak vent speed is 23m/s in 6" ports. Boost at 20 Hz and 2. order HP applied.

that's the tradeoff. the driver is good for 20mm, but not the power to get there in a smaller enclosure. max performance is in the big'un. then again, can't always accommodate the big'un. 6 cu ft tuned 19hz would be a good one.

Listen. It's All Good.

Congrats on getting a house, it's a good time for it while interest and price is low. I can imagine next year with the adjusted tax yearly.

Congrats on both counts Marty!

As far as the comparo goes, I can tell you that two dual opposed Datyon cabs(total of 4 18s) with 5kw total sounds wonderful. Not sure how big a bass head you are, but that's quite a bit of bass for most rooms, unless you're chasing ridiculous numbers. I actually have built a single 18 Dayton with 800w plate amp from Funk Audio for my parents. In their 2000cube room, it's very well suited....not enough for fools like us, but well suited for the application biggrin.gif My point to that though is that 4 of them will be very good in most living room situations. Heck, experiment with it...try em' out like that and if it doesn't do it for you, try to find a way to WAF up those Marty subs biggrin.gif

Thanks for the kind words Chop, Splotten, LTD02, & Datranz! I am definitely looking forward to the married life with the person that I have been with since she was a teenager! She is about to graduate law school at Ole Miss, so with her studying for the bar and also planning a wedding. We are kind of both overwhelmed!

I really like this idea of two duel opposed enclosures. I may start on these enclosures next week just to try them out. I am still undecided if I want to keep my iNuke3000 and get another iNuke3000 and a MiniDsp, or sell my iNuke3000 and go with two EP4000's and pair those with a MiniDsp.

you are going to need a minidsp reguardless what you do. high pass for ported, eq for seal. i use 1 channel of minidsp with inkuke for my seal jbl w15gti. works out really nice.

Update as of 10/21/2013

I have been playing with the Speakon connectors and have finally dialed in on the correct connection. This sub is now playing loud & low! I am so impressed! Now I have to finish up the second Marty Sub and figure out what I am going to do with this passive MFW-15. I think that I will be ordering two more of these HO18's for use in 2 more Marty Subs, for a total of 4! Then I will probably upgrade my amps to two CV5000's, running two subs on each amp!

Sweeeeet, glad to hear you are happy with them! The CV are a great choice as well, I love mine! I actually had once CV5k run in 2ohm stereo to four Dayton 18s and it was fantastic!

Nice, Marty! I think you will be very happy with some proper power from a CV amp or similar as well.

Have you figure you listening space yet? I would dout you need more usable bass with the amp upgrade and minidsp. I notice I rarely ever listen at ref volumes. It's only for showing off. But attendees asked me to turn it down.

Hooked up and nothing. I triple checked connections. Hooked sub in series , pos plus one , neg plus two. Hooked output a of inuke 3000. Changed mode to bridge. Xlr from input of inuke to umc200 xlr.
Changed speakon from minus one to plus two on both ends of 25 ft cable.

What next ?

uh oh, d.o.a. marty?

9v battery to the driver terminals and make sure the cone moves forward with positive terminal to red to make sure that the voice coils are wired up properly.

"Changed speakon from minus one to plus two on both ends of 25 ft cable."

wait...the speakon on the subwoofer side did not need to be switched unless that is how you wired the driver to the connection terminal.

Listen. It's All Good.

I used your wiring drawing
uqebares.jpg

I switched both ends of speakon cable with negative moving to plus two. Should i move subwoofer side of speakon cable back to negative at minus one ? From the subwoofer to the connection I went with negative to plus two terminal of the below connector

it should be fine the way that you wired it through the connector.

just out of curiousity, did you turn the gains on the amp up a bit? one guy actually had his gains all the way down and was stumped.

do you have a spare piece of wire and a battery to test the driver from the input on the subwoofer enclosure?

and just to triple check that wiring on the sub again. you are sure that the black terminal on one side goes around to the red terminal on the other side? it is the color that is important not whether it is on the right side or left side.

the red and black on the sub may be reversed as in the second picture that I posted:
http://www.avsforum.com/t/1489541/large-ported-dayton-ho18s/420#post_23821358

again, what is important is the colors (polarity) not the physical location.

Yes I went red to black. Do I have to remove the sub to do the battery test ?

just roll open the speakon and touch wire there. make sure it isn't connected to your amp of course while doing this. if the driver doesn't move, something isn't wired properly. if it moves properly (out when +1 touches positive on battery), then moving back to the amp is the next step.

Can't tell for sure what's touching or not in the pic, but you definitely need 2 wires - plus to plus, minus to minus, at the same time.
