As to why I didn't jump -

I didn't for two main reasons.

The UM-18 SHOULD be just a couple of dB's down for $700 less. The way my brain traditionally works is you either go with a deal or you go with the best. Arguably the UXL-18 was a bit of both, but I've either got my heart set on the LMS 5400 or a deal. If I get something in the middle then I'm typically just left with "what ifs", and the potential desire to upgrade later. Ask HuskerOmaha about that. wink.gif The UM-18 (to me) is a better looking driver with, what should be, perfectly usable performance for dirt cheap. (Looks are important to me because I have those fancy looking cabs to fill which are actually custom made for the LMS-5400 - pre drilled LMS 5400 mounting holes and everything).

I'm massively curious about the new SI HST-18 too. MASSIVELY. I'm eagerly awaiting info on that setup. I'm crossing my fingers for a group buy there as well, and that was a big factor in my hold off too.

I'm also talking with Part's Express right now through an e-mail dialogue about potentially organizing a group buy on the LMS-5400. Similar to what Blah450 did with the UXL-18. Not sure if that's going to happen, but it's another hope.

I also have a ball up in the air with JTR I'm toying with the idea of a couple of 215's, and selling some of my other gear to cover it.

Gosh....make up my mind already.

I'll be a bummed out Mofo if you can put together a LMS-5400 group buy.....I just ordered one 3 hours ago!

If you do get anything going soon let me know, I'll try to cancel my order and get in on the group buy.

two way, 25mm each way.

Possibly a silly question, but...

... is there a review that specifically states this (for the HT18, I mean) or is it just something known through experience? smile.gif I'm looking at a push-pull design and would be cool if they are guaranteed quiet!

Josh Ricci had done a few video of several drivers he has tested. He shows in each video a driver free air and then ramping up the power. I remember there was a video of the SI 18HT driver.

Check the Data-Bass forums and you should find a few more videos of drivers.

Well the group buy attempt on the LMS 5400 seems to be a no go. The folk at Part's Express are nice enough, but after several back and forth e-mails they said the best they could offer would be a $879 per driver at 40 quantity group buy. If we were to proceed with the group buy I would organize it like Blah450 did for the UXL-18. However, I'm afraid the $879 price isn't a steep enough discount to generate enough participation to sell 40 drivers - at least that's my expectation.

I was asking/targeting an $800ish per driver price in my inquiries, but they said they couldn't meet that with current expenses including expensive shipping of the two parts of each driver.

I think at this point I'll likely stick with my Dayton Audio UM-18 pre-order, unless the SI HST-18 testing by Ricci at data-bass gets finished before the pre-order ships and captures my attention.

I have the interesting opportunity to pickup four new in box lms 5400 subs for $800 each for my nice 3 cubic foor sealed enclosures (21" squares). I have another opportunity to pickup four more identical sealed enclosures and hold out for eight of the ultimax. So outside of amps both options cost a bit over $4k. What do you guys suggest? Four LMS 5400 or eight Ultimax for the same basic cost in identical 3' cubic boxes.

Or I might just let this one pass...

Thinking it through, just a nice opportunity.

Kcnitro07 has two of the same cabs and purchased a couple lms 5400 subs. I saw his setup last night and it really liked and sounded clean! If like to do a comparison someone soon with some of the KC guys to compare the LMS and the SI or Dayton.

I haven't modeled the Dayton's to see how they will compare to the LMS 5400s and of course we don't know how they'll sound compared to one of the cleanest subs made. But as an owner of 3 LMS 5400s, I'd say go for the 8 subs if you can fit them. Should be more output as well as more subs to put around the room and even out frequency response.

But frankly, if I had room for 8 18s, I'd personally try to find a way to fit 2, 3, even 4 HS24s. I know you have an investment in 4 cabinets but you should be able to sell those, especially with the GTG coming up.

You should checkout the sundown zv4 d2 for that box size, they're like 600/per. Model REALLY well in it.

I don't think the box size for 8 3 cubic foot boxes is the same as 1 of those 24" :P

I bought for more identical cabs from another AVSforum member who had bought them from Jason, when he was selling the 16 he owned.

So now I have eight of these cabs.

C'mon Ultimax!!!!!!!!!!!!! Where you at?
