This is supposed to be Dayton Audio's best driver. Their "capstone" according to the parts-express forum. If its not, it'll probably be delayed until it is. I'm expecting it to be the new budget darling. I've wondered if this driver was the cause behind either the uxl-18 group buy and the supposed termination of the si 18ht driver. I guess we'll see.

I would suspect UXL is closer to your S2 than what this UM-18 vapor ware will be.......

That was what I was thinking but if the um18 performs what those charts show I might try it out.

Are you subs sealed? I am assuming they are because of the below 15hz comment. What are you powering the uxl's with?

I have four sealed UXL's on one Peavey Ipr2 7500...........plenty of power for my listening tastes. I'm flat to 8-10 hz at 115 db's which I thought was not possible on a single 7500, yet I am. Glad I held off on purchasing a second Peavey.......,

Do you have a build thread and pictures that I can see? I also would love to see a chart if you have one.

You haven't seen or visited "Coffin Build" in dedicated theater build forum?

I have my Quadinator Build in DIY forum but most graphs of UXL and S2 are in my theater build thread. Without a doubt two UXL's trump an S2........wink.gif

I think one of the biggest downfalls of the mythical UM-18 is that for vented applications they require at least 7-8 ft3 of net volume, where a driver like the UXL-18 you can get away with a smaller enclosure. Basically the Martycube and Erich's latest 30x30x16 vented enclosure are not acceptable for the UM-18 if that's a consideration for some. For sealed applications however I could see this driver being very tempting.

Since I will have eight of these I'm trying to figure out the best amp setup for my budget.

I bought two inuke dsp 6000 units for four ultimax, but do I really want to buy two more inukes? (Four total 6000 amps?) 1 sub per channel at four ohm each channel.

The dual two ohm voice coil driver config is a bit of a problem in multiple subs for the newer class d amps that don't like to bridge.

A simple solution is the old iron 5000 watt amps that can bridge and run four subs bridged to four ohm of each 5000 watt amp. But then no onboard dsp. frown.gif

I've mentioned many times that a single ipr2 7500 will perfectly power four UM18s.

That's four down.

Still own those two inukes? wink.gif

I'm going to be running a single peavey ipr2 7500 to four UM18's. Two per channel for a two ohm load. It should be plenty of power. Doublewing uses a single one for his four UXLs and he said its plenty of power. They make a dsp version....

From what i've read they are the same design but the Crest gets higher quality parts and is better suited for 2 ohm operation.

I would echo this mostly.

The Crest name alone will probably net a price premium. However they make an excellent product so it's not exactly a bad choice either.

The Crest might be my choice, if my career depended on it. At home, not so much.

Imho, both will be identical for home use. Even big ol' basshead's like us but you must factor in the clear fact that you will have eight 18's in your home. That's.... gonna make a lot of bass. Just sayin'. Might not have to worried about pushing the envelope on them amps so much. wink.gif

Not that the IPR2 is bad, just that the 7.5 is definitely superior. The Crest Pro-LITE gets better/larger caps on the secondary side of the supply. Total capacitance and energy storage difference is significant. In all cases, the Pro-LITE choice of caps assumes money is no object. Not so for the IPR2.

Pro-LITEs get an expensive magnetic/hydraulic circuit breaker on the front panel.
Pro-LITEs get Neutrik input and output connectors. IPRs get Chinese clones.

All of the above added Crest performance features cost a little more, of course.

Your plan, and DW's current setup, is perfect with one possible exception. If you need the ability to adjust each speaker to get your desired FR you're kind of screwed having two subs/channel. DW's setup worked out great for him.

You will not be power limited in most situations driving multiple subs off one channel in 2 ohm mode using an IPR2 7500 as most subs are rated below 1500 RMS . You will have room to spare.

I agree. There are few situations where you will benefit from the Crest in the home theater arena given the current driver choices and configurations. Unless you're getting power hungry massive drivers, just get the IPRs.

So did this driver ever actually come out? It's showing out of stock at parts express for another month, should I trust that? I'm wanting to start building my cabinets. I can handle waiting a month. But is there a comparable driver out there in case things go sour?

Nope not yet. It's been pushed back many times. I think the original release was in like, November 2013 or something.

Not sure if there is another drive like this driver or not because nobody has been able to test it. They must have really messed something up and are trying to get it perfect before releasing it.

I can't imagine what has taken so long to cause such a long delay for this driver. For the amount of time its been delayed you would think that they almost redesigned it from the ground up.

I think there have been 6 delays (that I know of anyway, possibly more) to the release date. I would not trust the release date at all. As another member stated above the original release date was back in Q3 of 2013. We're nearing 3/4 of a year later now which is an obnoxious delay.

I personally would not consider building an enclosure for this driver until it is released unless it is sealed. If you are considering vented I would wait. The recommended minimum enclosure size for the Ultimax 18 is at least 50% larger than that of many other popular 18" drivers such as the SI or UXL. If you are planning on building a monster sized vented enclosure I supposed you could wing it, but I wouldn't think about it personally unless I were building sealed.

I think so. They posted numbers and now I am assuming that they are trying to get to those numbers by redesigning the driver. Why it is taking a year to do so after announcing a driver is strange. This driver should be the best bang for your buck the way the delays are going. It has to be perfect now, right?

Actually driver is 5 months late.

January 30th was first release date.

PE started pre-orders last week of November 2013.
