Scott, in your honest opinion comparing this to the UXL-18 what could I expect the advantages of the HST-18 over the UXL-18? Honestly the money isn't the deal breaker if there's performance to back it up.

If it wasn't for the group pricing on the UXL I would hold off on buying it until more info on this driver is released. Or... Maybe it has been and Ive just been too busy to come across it......

I'm hoping the uxl18 is going to be value and performance . Virtually the same output as lms and not a bank breaker. 650 for me is too pricey . What I do like in the last year is a lot more options out their for everyone

It's hard to say. I have never used these drivers. I can only go by what specifications are available to me and the promises of a certain performance from those who made them. The UXL18 has limited tests on DB and the HST has yet to be tested in full in an enclosure. All I can do is speculate. You're guess is as good as mine. What I do see is a very powerful motor/VC combo in each driver, massive LF output capability, exceptional SQ and build quality.

It's up to the buyer if the $200 difference is worth it to them. Remember the price for the UXL at $410 is only if a full order of 40 is made and you won't get your drivers until February some time. Not sure what the availability of the new HST is.

Very true, also one other thing I've considered is that a FTW-21 would only cost $5 more then the HST-18.

I'm pretty sure I'll stay the course with the group buy on the UXL-18 and hope we hit the target of 40 drivers. If that doesn't go thru, depending on how these test I'd be very interested in them also.

I'll just be waiting waiting waiting and waiting to see some posted measurements from Josh. smile.gif

I modeled the UXL-18 and the HST-18 with WinISD and from what I can tell the frequency response looks very similar at the bottom end of the spectrum with the UXL-18 modeled with 34mm of xmax and the HST-18 modeled with 35mm of xmax at 1500 watts in sealed boxes - say 3.5 to 4 cubic foot. The two were within 1 dB or so by 10hz, with the UXL-18 having about 3dB higher max advantage at 100hz. The question at hand then is two fold. The UXL-18 is maxed at around the 34mm rating right? Josh says in his initial review that the SI is capable of 50mm -- and higher. Then there is also the question of power handling -- how that plays into the equation -- max power handling and distortion numbers will be interesting to see. Before I post my winisd models I'd like to run them by Scott or LTD02 or someone with more sim experience. I'm still a greenhorn with winISD and don't want to post something that is inaccurate.

Yup. That's exactly what I got in my sims. The two drivers model very similar. We will have to wait until we get more thorough tests from Josh at DB.

Yeah it looks like the Xmech of the UXL-18 is listed as 45mm and the HST-18 is listed as 50mm.

Read the subjective comments on Josh's reviews. The UXL-18 was making noises at higher excursion levels. The SI was not making any bad noises until beyond 50mm. At least that's how I read the two reviews. These noises may be totally masked by a dampened sealed box. I'm not pointing out anything groundbreaking, and I'm not sure that even matters. I'm just reading between the lines in the written reviews on both subs.

Wow this just got more complicated. Dayton Ultimax 18, awesome deal on on UXL-18, or this new SI HST-18? What are us normal folks with money to spend to do? smile.gif

Sure it would be nice if it wasn’t there but he also found that the SDX made some noise. In actual play I’ve never herd a peep though.. well, except for the bass. The actuality of it is it’s fairly common with heavy hi excursion drivers.

What is the regular price for the UXL?

Also any idea what the excursion limit is on the 15"?

I myself am going to try and get a pair of the HST 15's. Sure there are other woofers out there. But I have been very happy with a few brands out there and I really want to try this one. I myself am going with SI's 15's also because I want to have a dual opposed tiny enclosure and that makes the 15 perfect for me. I lose a bit on the bottom end but all honesty I don't ever push my woofers very hard. I don't have the funds like most users on this forum do but I am going to try and do four of the HST 15's next year. I will be getting rid of my FTW's to afford this also.

We can always nit pick specs and price but it fits my application perfectly. I just have to try and swing one clone or a pair of IPR2 7500's also to complete the system. Oh and a Marchandt WM-8. biggrin.gif

And Nick, SI, I sent you an email about shipping and pricing and sent you my address and never got a reply back. My name is my forum name minus dm.

Here are a couple of winisdpro models I'm throwing up, after confirming Scott modeled similar in alternate software he uses. Obviously these are sims. Josh's tests will be much better when he throws the HST-18 in the box.

UXL-18 vs. HST-18 WinISD pro SPL model at 1500 watts in a 3.5 cubic foot sealed box.

UXL-18 vs. HST-18 WinISD pro cone excursion model at 2250 watts in a 3.5 cubic foot sealed box.

Looks like it uses Sundown X/Z v.4 parts with more motor and a more compliant suspension for HT use in small sealed cabs.

The Sundown X/Zv4 basket and some parts must be used to accomplish such high stroke. Thankfully I'm friends with the owner of Sundown Audio and have been granted permission to use his baskets, cones, and surrounds. cool.gif

Anymore news on mechanical limits of the 15"?

And is the suspension quiet enough on the 15 or 18" do have a M&K style woofer setup with one magnet in the cabinet and the other out? Hope that makes sense.
