I posted this on a another thread and thought I would post it here also just in case someone was interested. If anyone has questions please feel free to ask.

Figured I voided the warranty by doing the fan mod anyways so I thought I would try and make it match my avr and other equipment. I took it apart, careful to take lots of pictures to make sure I was able to put it back together. Left the control board attached to the bottom of the housing, just wrapped it up really good with newspaper and tape. 2 long strips of 1" masking tape work perfect to cover the front decal and then also covered the back. You should disconnect the front face from the board and take the 10 or so small screws off and remove the buttons. Again take lots of pictures to remember location of connects, buttons. The connectors on the board have glue on them that comes right off with a needle nose pliers. Then I used Krylon satin black, the one that has primer and paint in one. Oh, yeah make sure you scuff it up a little with steel wool and wipe it down good with a lint free rag. Sounds like a lot of work but it really isnt. The paint dries in 10 minutes. From start to finish in about 5 hrs including 3 coats of paint and 1hr in between to dry.

The handles on the other hand where not so easy and they are destroyed. They are plastic and not metal so the paint did not adhere correctly. I tried to remove the paint and it was just a sticky mess. I picked up some standard drawer pulls from Lowes in black. As long as they have the standard 3" from screw hole to screw hold you are good. They have chrome ones, black ones or you can run a small screw with a nut on it and avoid any handles. I now call it my black berry, (get it?)

Thanks I don't see why they choose gray. Most equipment even in the pro area which is what these are meant for is black.

Donny, I have seen your work you would knock this out in one hour. To be funny though to try to cross the border with this monster in the back of the van. We've been dying to go back and see the Vancouver aquarium so I might have to take you up on that one day.

I can't spray paint at all. My nickname would be runsndrips. Its a standing offer. My kids like the aquarium too. Were looking at having a gtg up here in Bc in June/July . Maybe you can drive up for that.

Thanks, and yes I agree. That would be very nice. My rack now looks like a christmas tree. I have blue from receiver, orange from this, all colors from the Monster Cable power center, green from the xbox and blue from the playstation and red from the charging station from my xbox controller. All I need now is for them to blink to "We Wish You Merry Christmas"

cessna, what does it take to get the handles off?

I just discovered that I can't close the equipment door of my new HT rebuild because the handles stick out too far.

There are 4 screws that hold them in but to get to them you have to take the face off. The 6 on the top plate have to come off and the 3 from the bottom plate. Then just move the face forward enough to access the 4 screws that hold the handles in. The handles I got at lowes dont stick out any further than the gain knobs.

I have some experience with replacing smd leds in this color.
it seems orange and red smd leds have a lower Vf (Forward Voltage) than the blue or white leds.... it's so low, the blue or white leds would not even lit dim.
Also, the orange ones around the volume know also have red.
iirc the Vf for white and blue is >3 volts, and for red/orange it's quite a bit lower...

I've done smd soldering, so I *might* attempt this mod, but if the multimeter show anything below 3 Volts, the mod stops there, sadly...
(otherwise it would require modding the drive voltage, which makes things quite a bit more conplicated....)

Just checked, blue/green/white requires at least 50% more volts....
These orange leds get between 1.8 and 2volts, (2.4 max) and blue/white would need 3volts, so this does not look the promissing....
(however, this IS a DIY forum !!!)

May have to do this mod! Looks great!
It has to be worth at least 200 watts and those handles probably add another 50...
Maybe if we drop the volts going to the lights we get another 50?
300 more watts and nothing can touch these wink.gif

You are much braver than I am. I have a hard time with soldering the small items like this. I would love to see it done, though. Thanks for the compliment. I know it doesn't add any performance but it looks better to me, and for someone with a undiagnosed OCD it makes a big difference.biggrin.gif

That's bad news, but great information - thanks for that! Based on what you've provided, I'd have to say that even if it can be done it's beyond my capabilities and certainly past my risk threshold, so I'll let this one go and find something else to obsess over.

hehe yeah I only found this out when I wanted to replace the orange smd leds in my Uniden scanner.
it was only after I had soldered the first led I discovered it would not turn on hehe biggrin.gif I then checked the voltages driven to the default leds....
