Here are my results:

(and NO cheating folks wink.gif)

Basically you want the highest score with the lowest number of attempted trials in each category.
Not sure if there is anything beyond level 7 (never bothered to try.)

This isn't double-blind, it's purely perception-based.

http://harmanhowtolisten.blogspot.ca/2011/01/welcome-to-how-to-listen.html

My guess is that everyone should be able to get to level 4 without much problem.
Anyone that can beat (or match) my scores in each category is a golden-ear (IMO).

+9-> Chuck Norris!!!
8-> Diamond Ear! (Harman Trained-Listeners are at or above this point)
7-> Golden Ear.
6-> Serious skill.
5-> Above Average skill.
4-> Joe-Normal.
3-> Noob or You must have hearing damage.
2-> Damn, these drugs are good.

Curious to see what the Van GTG people score in particular. wink.gif

Note: I had to run it in compatibility mode: XP SP3, to get it to work.

The download itself is halfway down the page and is 117MB.

You can put any username in it (I just left the password blank).

Apparently there is a level 9.

I've revised the scoring on the OP.

Correction: Apparently there is a level 24, woah... that's insane!!! eek.gif

Apparently I need to spend more time scoring my ears with this app, I thought there was only ~10 levels in total!

The manual says a min of 3 attempts are needed to pass a given level; which means after 75 to 100 attempts if you aren't at level 24, then you have basically reached your max score.
Of course, going that far is very time consuming, so if people give up after 10-30 trials per category, then that is understandable.

Got my score to 7+ now that I've spent a few more minutes with the app.

Gonna attempt the first 3, see if I can get those to level 6 or 7, they are hardest because of the number of possibilities for mistake.

Apparently my ears are hyper-sensitive to stereo imaging, I already knew that, this just statistically proves it.

Finally reached my limit.

Too bored to continue beyond this point; that and... I don't think my ears have much more to give, I'd probably create more errors than progress beyond this score.

Here is what Dr. Olive had to say:

"Level 8 is the minimum level required to be a Trained Harman listener.
For those who can't get to level 8 perhaps you have a future in audio marketing and sales smile.gif
-Dr Olive (Director of Acoustic Research, Harman International)"

Wow, level 8 min huh?
Well I guess if that was going to be your job it makes sense.

I've completed the Philips Golden Ear online challenge as well.

www.goldenears.philips.com/en/challenge.html

Only 710 people have passed it thus far.

I found it easy with the one exception of the Gold timbre level 2 challenge, man that was very hard.
No wonder only 13% of people pass it!!!

Try it for yourself and you'll see what I mean...

neat!

quite a bit of time to invest in a 'test' though. timbre was definitely challenging, for me.

congratulations on making it to gold level.

You were able to complete all of Silver Ear and the other 5 of Golden Ear though? If so... then you pretty much have a golden ear too.

It's very difficult to tell the difference between a lower dip and a higher peak, they have a very similar psycho-acoustical effect. It trips up everyone. (Only 746 people have passed it thus far.)
Harman Band-ID level 6 & 7 is just as hard.

and level 24... let's NOT even talk about that!

The last mp3 test in silver was very hard too.

50% of those who complete basic will get all the way to gold trainer (i.e silver + some)

and 64% of silver ear's will fail to obtain gold.
Gold-timbre was the only one that gave me real significant problems.

New high score. 8+ on the attributes now.

Haven't re-tried the Band ID's, they aren't easy...

This looks fun! Are you guys actually listening to this on your systems, or on headphones of some sort?

Headphones.
I'm using my aging Sennheiser 5XX headphones and the Oppo 105 as a DAC, and the XSP-1 as the headphone amp.

Headphones are superior for rendering stereophonics, spacial details and granular details.
Speakers are good for rendering realistic SPL, but tend to mask those finer details.

It would be interesting to see how far we could get using just speakers vs headphones.

well compared to my $20 earbuds, my guess is I might actually have a better chance listening to the tests in the theater, haha. I want to test myself out though! Anyone have a nice set of headphone they would let me borrow for a couple weeks?

Found this program on Sean Olive's blog today while my daughter was sleeping. I quit after 30 something tests at level 10 on my first try through. Didn't realize it was that long or how much it was going to keep going. I was listening on my bedroom system and its not eq'd flat. At that point I already started to realize that I'd need to calibrate everything to get much more accurate responses. Found this thread after searching how high the levels go. I may try this again later. Has anyone on here gotten into the 20's?
