You might be better off without a center if you can't put one reasonably close to ear level though

I think the Cinema 1-88 special would make a great center channel, it's using the SEOS-15 waveguide so it should have a nice big soundstage.

A thing I don;t understand is how can a speaker be good for movies but not music (not counting wanting to play full range) most movies have music, so the Tempest when crossed at 80 (or even 60hz) would sound about the same for where it counts 80hz-20khz?

I don't really know if I can answer that question but one thing I can say is that I have always really enjoyed horn speakers for moves but not so much for music. that's more of a characteristic than an actual performance aspect but its just my 2 cents

I think it also depends on the horn speaker too though, for example I've heard both the Klipsch RF-7II's and Ultra 2 speakers and didn't like them for music. But I've heard both the Tempest and my JTR 228HT's and like both for music, and actually love my 228HT's for music.

So how do you compare 228HT with Tempest for both movies & musics?

Well still a little early to say for sure, but I still prefer the 228HT's. The Tempest obviously have more mid bass, but so they should using a 12" driver. I still find the 228's have better highs and a little more clear and detailed for music use, and I know people have made comments that the 228's could be less neutral and a little brighter. And I don't think that's the case at all, I still think the differences come down to the BMS compression driver.

For music so far I'd say that the Tempest are around 90% of the 228HT's for music, but for movies they close that gap to around 95%. And I just find the 228HT's a little more detailed for dialogue. But it's still impossible to fault the Tempest at their price, I think they sound awesome and have really been enjoying the Tempest.

I'm pretty sure I could bump up the mid bass with the 228HT's by applying a low shelf filter to them to bump up the 80-150hz range a few dB, but just haven't gotten around to doing that. Even with doing that I still don't think they'd have the same mid bass of the Tempest, but would definitely be closer.

I find with all the seos speakers I've heard they need a little eq with mids and highs for my preference. With the tempest, minion, and fusion mtm they needed about 2 dB's less in 300-800 range. Just a tad aggressive for voices. Then I add 1.5-2 dB's around 3-6k. Use 5-6 peqs to do this.

Could be my room or just my taste. I think would eq I could get tempest to 95% of 228's. Considering price I would be happy with that. Your right Joe that the jtrs I believe will always have that extra something.

I can hear it when you bring them over on Thursday ???

I think almost everyone except for maybe the "what if" guys would be happy with the Tempest. Hell I know I'd be happy with them if I didn't already own the 228HT's, and I'd be the first to admit it if I thought the Tempest sounded better. Because the first thing I'd do is sell my 228HT's and built some Tempest and probably still have a $1000 left over in my pocket!

1099, tempest, sentinels,
nothing commercial is in their league under 1 k per speaker. I don't want to really go over 1 k for the pair. I've heard b&w,Polk, def tech , kef, tekton, they get crushed by seos in my price point. can't afford seaton or jtrs.

There are too many variables to answer that question.

I think the group at gtg will be able to give some suggestions. everyone has different tastes, rooms, etc but I think their will be some conclusions in terms of which speaker has certain characteristics. because you can't demo seos, gtg is the closest you will get.

At the end of the day...let your ears decide what's best.
Unfortunately nobody can there's no place to demo all the seos.

that's an advantage of having GTG's. They help but it's not your ears that are satisfied.
We need to rely on what these GTG's have to say.

I think it's great that people can take the time to do GTG's and write down THEIR impressions.

thanks in advance to all those folks.

I think the differences between most seos are subtle. If you can eq then I think they will all sound pretty similar. Too bad we can't have seos store in every city [emoji41]

Agreed. My statement was more directed towards the compromises from one design to the next. Each one fits a different goal. Now if you throw out size and price, the decision gets much easier. ;-)

Here's a measurement that I just took of my 228HT and one of the Tempest's that I have in my theater room.

Both have zero EQ applied to them. Green is the Tempest and pink is the 228HT.
