id do a test part with "Dark Walnut" to see if its what you want, hard to tell from that pic, something like "Jocabean" might be closer but is hard to say. Could also be close to "walnut" which minwax has as a gel stain, which i believe is what our stairs are

Poly should start today when I get home

I need to swing by Home Depot and grab some things today and want to know if I can just use weather stripping to seal the driver in? I normally use the stuff from PE but I don't have enough of it nor is what I have wide enough

I've used the gray colored (closed cell type) weather stripping from HD and it works just like the PE stuff.

It also really depends on your wood. With Birch, the lighter start to the wood will create a different end product than with something like an oak. which will naturally be darker.

Sibuna,

I'm a hobbyist woodworker and still have a ton to learn but one thing I learned, especially when using poplar or maple is that you need to condition the wood or you get splotches or uneven stain penetration. It may be the picture but in the last one you posted, it looks like there is some splotchiness that conditioning might have addressed. Or it could be the camera/lighting. Anyway, this is what I use for conditioning although I know Minwax has some at the big box stores.

http://www.cn-woodworking.com/cn-pre-color-conditioner/

Great job. As good as it looks, I know its going to sound even better.

what you see in that pic is what will be the bottom, i didn't put the prestain conditioner on it like everything else as it was the down side when i did everything else. also it looks worse then it really is due to the lighting

i just use the minwax stuff

Makes sense. Glad to know the Minwax prestain conditioner works too. Thanks.

I'm just messin man So lemme guess, you sanded down to 600 with the orbital first. Then applied conditioner, two coats of stain, and now a single coat of poly. You will now go back and orbital sand at 600 again for a little bit and hit it with another coat?

close
I used the orbital to 600 and then blocked with 800 before used the pre stain conditioner - that blocking prob isn't needed but I always do it
let that sit for a cpl hours and then did 2 coats of stain with 6 or so hours in between coats, after the 2nd coat I let it dry for a day before the poly.
I don't used the orbital between poly coats, unless something is very wrong, normally I just block 600 to knock down any bubbles/dust and give the next coat something to stick to
