So it seems everybody is building SEOS-based speakers. Is there anybody with a pair in the southern Indiana / northern Kentucky region who would be interested in letting me take a listen and compare them to my Boston Acoustics VR3s? Subwoofers are easy to perfect, but I'm really picky when it comes to speakers and couldn't jump into a few thousand dollar mains project without hearing some first.
Ok, regardless of price, my time is a lot more limited than it used to be, and I would be interested in hearing a par to see if it is worth pursuing or if I am just fine as is.
I am in southern KY, but I pulled my TD12M's out of my SEOS speakers to be used in my new design. So I have three slot ported boxes with SEOS-12 and DNA360's in them sitting un-used. Just need to add TD12M's to them.
I used to have a pair of BA t1000 as well as t1030 and compared them to a pair of Seos Fusion-8 Alchemy and from 80hz and up the Alchemy's were better. Clearer, more neutral, more dynamic, just as smooth... no contest for movies...
Not sure off the top of my head. The 1000s and 1030s were from the 90s and regarded as some of the best speakers BA produced. I have not heard the pair you have and no offense but I doubt they have the sound quality that a pair of Tempests or 1099s have. My Tempest out class my old Bostons for music and movies, not even close.
That being said I really love the neutral sound of my old Boston's and if that is how yours sound you will really like any of the Bagby designed Seos. They are fantastic neutral sounding speakers.
I'm not suggesting one or the other is better, I'm simply putting feelers out there if somebody has some nearby so I can listen. Of all the components in my HT, speakers are the ones that I absolutely must try out and compare against others first.
I hear ya, I'm usually the same way. I just happened to have a friend that was looking for a small set of speakers so I diy'ed him a pair of the SEOs Alchemy's for a wedding present and was blown away. Being a huge fan of the Boston Acoustic sound, I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents On top of it all, I was very much not a horn person before I heard the SEOs kits. Hopefully someone can provide you a good demo because they are fantastic
Build a pair of FUSION 8's for the cheap cost they have and listen. Then just imagine bigger/better. I'm guessing the Fusion 8's would impress you for the $166 kit. Everyone can use a pair of kick ass bookshelfs, use them in the garage after your audition, or for outdoor parties. They crank.
Well if I were going to try a kit, I'd at least want to try one where the final product could potentially end up in my system if it were good - I'd have no use for Fusion 8's. I see a Fusion 15 kit - is this similar to, if not the same thing, what a lot of people on here are building? Does anyone know what increment each line is regarding off axis listening?
More powerful? I'm not looking to DJ with my speakers. They are already over 92db sensitive in room and play louder than I require - the characteristics I look for are sound quality, clarity, soundstage, and imaging.
Every seos speaker will be better then what you have. You will need surrounds . Most start small , find what they like and go from there. Can't go wrong with any model.
Im a klipsch fan, love horned tweeters. How would you describe the fusions in comparison? I was thinking about making two fusion15's for my office or maybe use them as monitors for my drums.
At 92db sensitivity you're running into distortion quite quickly at or near reference level playback at modest distances. Headroom is key for the clarity you seek.
Read this thread, it's a real eye opener for folks with low sensitivity speakers.
Just to chime in here for a second, SteveCallas is a staple member over on HTS in the DIY subwoofer section. He was one of the members who pioneered and quantified the performance of the LLT (Large Low Tuned) alignment and has been a great asset to many of members over there. He is not new to the game, perhaps only new to SEOS designs.
Steve, where do you live in case someone close by can offer an audition?
I'm big on privacy, so at this stage let's just say southern Indiana / northern Kentucky. If someone is near that area and has a pair, they can PM me and I can sort things out from there.

-I don't listen at reference, the loudest I have ever watched a film at is -8.
-I checked the stats on my speakers again and the main 5 of my 9 are all 93db efficient as opposed to the 92 I stated earlier.
-I sit 6' from the front 3
-A mere 42 watts will handle the largest of any dynamic peak
-Neither the receiver nor speakers are running into much distortion at all at such levels (Onkyo 3010)
Headroom is not the key to what I am seeking, as a gain won't really improve anything. I'm not even in the mindset to change my speakers, I've had them since 2005 and love them, I'm merely curious to listen to some SEOS based speakers because they seem to have taken off in popularity. I've listened to several DIY speakers before, and while they tend to excel in one area or another, they tended to leave me wanting in another. I just want to give some of these an audition in the rare chance they do everything I want well.

Well, I know the SEOS does not sound like a typical horn speaker. It is very smooth with a flat response. The sound stage is huge but so are the speakers(bookshelves). I would think you would gain sound stage and midbass slam with the 15 inch version as I have not run into a speaker yet which has midbass like a 15 inch loaded speaker.
that and lack of distortion. my 15 inch seos speakers have MUCH lower distortion than any ones I've heard (but then again I'm not sure what Steve is running)
Yeah, that too but that may not be audible if the distortion was low enough anyways. I measured 3 different speakers, SEOS pure 10, JTR 888LP, and BFM DR-250. The SEOS had less distortion overall but not the winner during real world playback but that was because of the 10, with a 15 it could have been different. I still think about trying out the 15 inch version. Having said that I recently tried the Unity 215 and still preferred my speakers and many like the unity better than the SEOS. This is why everything is so subjective. Many use without a flat response which makes things even harder to compare.
I still can't imagine it not being better than a commercial speaker like that. Bigger sound stage, more mid bass, flat response, less amp power used, all equates to a better experience on paper. You never know.
