Anyone know if these will be back for another run? I picked up on the DIY speaker craaft a little too late to order this last time and would LOVE to have these for my LCR!
I currecntly have a 7.1 system consisting of HSU 2x HB1 MK2's with HC1 MK2 for front stage and 4x HIW1's, 2 on back wall and 2 in ceiling. Bottom end is a single VTF-15H. Current AVR is a Denon X4000. Sony projector and 120, 16x9, Vapex tab tensioned motorized screen.
Room is about 15x30x10, open concept kitchen, dining, and living room on second floor with stairs leading to first and third floor.
I'm looking to go DIY with at least 2 subs and and front speakers (1099's please!), behind a AT screen wall. %70 Movies / %30 Music. The HSU's are great, just think it's time to step up my system. Seeing all the amazing systems you guys put together has motivated me!
You will just have to wait until they come available again. I know waiting sucks..
If you see them on his site make sure you order right away, the 1099's go fast.
You could try the 88 specials. They are in stock cost a little less and I love mine.
The mids were a close-out and Erich bought the last few hundred. They are now gone and the company has been asked, and they will not be making any more for us. The current 1099 is done and there are no drop in replacements. Basically will need a new crossover and design, pretty much a new speaker. Tuxedocivic who designed the speaker has stated that he is working on other designs now and moving on. So as of now it looks like this iteration of the 1099 is finished. This has all been documented on the last few pages on thread here.
Dang it! Well this kinda sucks. Thanks for the info!
I'll be keeping a close eye on the DIY sectionn from now on. I'm sure more great speakers are coming down the road!
Luke pretty much got it right. And I did say that I've moved on to some other designs. But I should clarify that, that's the present situation. Erich would like to offer another 1099, and I'd love to design one. So we'll see how that goes. The existing 1099 design is done though. That mid ran out faster than expected. Erich had a couple hundred afaik, but the speaker was popular I guess. And if people are buying 3 speakers at a time, that's 6 mids. That's only 33 people. So ya, they went faster than expected.
I guess this is as good as any other opportunity to ask, what was so great about the 1099 that made it sell so well. So if we do it again, we know the targets. Was it:
1. The center channel option;
2. The 99db/2.83V/m;
3. The look;
4. Cost ($378 each);
5. Sound quality;
6. Other??
What would you change?
1. More bass;
2. Cheaper/more expensive;
3. Higher/lower sensitivity;
4. Black woofers;
5. Other?
Your feedback would be appreciated. And just a heads up, cheaper and higher sensitivity ain't gonna happen. A new 1099 will easily break the $400 mark. So feedback on that would be appreciated as well. Would they be worth $450? 3 ways cost money.

I know that I'm not the average buyer here - and I haven't been really in the market for 1099s, nor will I be in the future, most likely.
If I were designing it:
1 - center channel option must stay
2 - sensitivity is flexible, but only by 2-3dB
3 - the look should stay (side-by-side mids in WTMMW), but I think a different port arrangement might be cool, to differential V1 from V2
4 - cost is flexible, but shouldn't be more than +$75-$100
5 - sound quality (what does that mean?) midrange clarity is a must - this to me is the what makes it successful
Changes?
1 - more bass - well fine, I guess, but I think people are just afraid of EQ
I wouldn't change much.
Problem I see with that is this. I think one of the key features of the 1099 was it's 12.5" height as a center. That's critical for a lot of people. A 1299 becomes 14.5" tall and that extra couple inches can kill the deal. Even some people found the 1099 to tall and had to go with the Fusion 8 mtm. So if it's not a good center, then might as well go two way. Like my big TMM. Especially since most people who ask for a 1299 is because they want killer mid bass. Well that can be easily accomplished with any SEOS 12 design. So I'm just not getting it. Maybe I'm over thinking it.
There's a chance for some extra 1099's because not all of them were put up. But it probably won't be a big number at all. And I want to keep some just in case spares are ever needed even though that's highly unlikely for these mids.
LTD02 (I believe that's who) contacted Celestion a while ago and asked them if another run of those mids could be made up. But I'm guessing the request wasn't for very many and they basically said no.
So if I get a chance I will contact them and see what can be done if a big order is made. Many times the order has to be at least 500 or they won't even take you seriously. But chances of a neo magnet version around that price likely won't happen, but we'll see.
When I think of DIY, my first thought is better performance for less cost then that of a manufacturer. I think that the cost to performance focus should be a strong consideration in any new design. It takes some of the fun out of the equation if we can't say we have such excellent sound quality for so much less then the comparable manufactured speaker.
What I meant by SQ was, is that why people bought the 1099. I was wondering what features about the speaker made it sell so well. Or if the center channel option or sensitivity or... Is why they bought it.
Won't be long and we'll start manufacturing drivers to our own specs so we are no longer at the mercy of the manufacturers............
Would be interesting to see a seos based speaker that was targeted 75% music and 25% ht. kind of a dedicated 2 channel tower (maybe encroaching on the maximus idea)
Here's a view from the bleachers for what it's worth, having never heard them and having committed my funds in another direction so I was never in the market for them.
- Awesome form factor, most of the other top-tier SEOS designs being chunky monkey monitors that don't align with everybody's aesthetic and have no chance as a center channel in the living room
- 3-way, which many people desire for one reason or another
- Clearly the sound quality. They eventually got what passes for a glowing endorsement from tux, a man certainly not known for glowing endorsements or self-promotion. ("Tux came right out and said they're pretty good? They must be awesome!") This followed by a well-timed GTG in which the 1099s were widely reported to have held their own with some very heavy hitters. And AFAIK all subsequent builders have been impressed. Some magic there for sure.
- 99dB is nice but I bet they still would have sold out at 95dB, all else equal.
Want to do it again? Don't intentionally change a thing, just see if you can find different drivers that can be molded into a speaker that makes you as happy as the 1099 does.
My two pennies worth...,.think it would be good to offer the package with XO built. I've built three and they are amazing, and although the process was straight forward for a beginner, I would happily have paid $50 a piece to have the XO built and supplied. Plus you get to keep your designs close to your chest
As someone who has heard many diysoundgroup speakers and several other brands it was these things that stood out for 1099.
1) price , right near top of my lcr budget. Need to stay under 2k for lcr for lots of people
2) combo of music and movies. Was really shocked at the gtg how good 1099 was for music. Held its own against speakers 3 times the price that are great speakers. Not perfect but every song ive heard has left me happy. No "I wonder what a better speaker would sound like " doubts for me.
3) midrange stellar. This is key for me. Midrange is 5 times more important to me then bass/midbass for mains. Voices are pure.
4) the width of the speaker is good. Making towers going in a living room is tough to accommodate much wider.
5).guitars and drums sound outstanding. Dynamic and snappy.
In summary for under 500 there the best I've heard for music/movie combo. I trust ryan when he says that to get better you have to spend a lot more and the improvement is maybe 5%.
Echo everything sslv2pwned said, right down to the blue woofer color.
I prefer to build the x-over myself but I may be the minority here, it is DYI after all though. Probably helps that I love to build electronics and am quite good at it. Maybe provide both options?
Thanks all for the feedback. I really agree with the point about form factor. The SEOS 10 is really a sweet spot in size. In case no one noticed, I really like 8 and 10" sized speakers
I'm detecting a few comments about XO assembly. I'm not sure what could be done about this. I'll have to chat to Erich when the time comes.

...For me Personally with the 1099, besides all the obvious SQ it allready has,.. esthetically, I wish it had All BLACK woofers, something like those on the Fusion 12
And if the Length, could be reduced slightly by rear Porting ?
Critical for me was the center option for a home theater setup without an AT screen. To me having a center channel match the LR was critical for me! It Has to look nice and sound great...period!!!
2. The 99db/2.83V/m;
I like the ability to run these off just an AVR too. I have mucho bass here and these can keep up with 130DB+ of
I think what made the 1099 successful was not one single attribute but all of them together. If you want to make another 1099 success story then literally repeat the recipe you just did and it will be a success and will probably sell well again among the community. I mean if you want to shift 5% here and 5%, then go ahead but you listed exactly why with your first points why the speaker was such a huge success.
1. The center channel option;
2. The 99db/2.83V/m;
3. The look;
4. Cost ($378 each);
5. Sound quality;
6. Other?? (depth)
So come up with another WTMMW design that is 12.5" wide, costing ~$400, with 99 dB sense and sounds amazing and it will literally become a staple at DIYSG. So answer me this; are there any other mids you can work with that will get close to what the original 1099 was. Even if they were $40/each...I don't think people would all of a sudden go "..Oh, it is now $398 each..I can't handle that".
I will agree with all of this except the price. I would have paid more. Having a front stage with speakers that are the same except layout was huge for me. There isn't anything on the market like them. I love how they look and it does matter to me. SQ on these is insane.
Tux you had the design goals right. I'm curious what you would change with some tweaking!
As someone who just realized you could DIY speakers about six months ago, I'll throw in my two cents. I came very, very close to buying LCR 1099's (and have a thread to prove it) but 9/10 people said they weren't the right speaker for me. In retrospect, they probably were the right speaker but I decided to use the funds I had to build out my subs. So for now, I'll keep rocking my Polk Monitor 70's and wait to see what you/DIYSG pull out of your bags next.
For me, a mere mortal among the HT gods here, the following were some important factors.
1) Sound quality to price ratio.
2) Center channel option: My family room is my theatre, and vis versa. When I hung my new TV a couple months ago, I made sure the center 1099 would fit just right between the TV and entertainment center.
Everything else you listed wasn't much of a consideration to me. Sensitivity is a two way sword, and I'm not a reference listener anyway.
