After reading all of the really positive comments in MKtheaters thread ("DIY DR250 and Yorkville...") about the JBL 4722N and how many folks praise these big JBL's, I would like to discuss the topic of DIY'ing an upgraded version of the 4722N with better/different drivers, and possibly a completely different speaker but one with the same form factor and similar design aspects.
First topic of discussion is how does the JBL 2384 waveguide used in the 4722N compare to the Seos 24? Does anyone know where I could purchase the big JBL 2384 waveguide?
I believe that the JBL 2384 uses a 1.5" compression driver, correct me if I am wrong. Would the JBL 2446 or 2447 work in the 2384 waveguide? What would be a good 1.5" cd to use if this waveguide is chosen over the Seos 24? My only requirement would be that it must be upgradable to having Be diaphragms at some point in the future.
Must be upgradeable to Be diaphragms will limit your choices. You can select which ones can be upgraded and go from there. I like the 1.4" CD's myself. I also like other horns beside just the JBL's but none of them will fit my room.
Also Not made a link for MK and others to purchase JBL gear from. There are also many replacement horn manufacturers out their also that sell the same thing for cheaper. It might not be as good or it may be just as good.
Not, those links are just for the pdf of the 4722 product page. Do you happen to know or have a link to where I can purchase the 2384 horn? That is what I am looking for. I vaguely remember reading that the 2384 can be had for around $100 but I can't find any places that sell it?
They are 1.5" CD's. As I mentioned in the other thread, after researching on LH, I upgraded to the 2450SL. It seems like this is the best 1.5" CD (JBL) short of going BE. If Truex comes forward with their less expensive BE phragm, I'll jump on those. I also have two of the 2447 with Radian AL phragms, but never tried them. They came with the 2352 horns which are supposed to be very good. Another nice sounding horn (according to various experts at LH) is the pt-h95hf. I have one in an AM6215/95. I used it as a center before the 4622's. It is really a great speaker and would be easy to DIY. I had to replace the x-over. Got a new one from JBL for $80.
Remember too the 2384 was designed to be behind a perf'd screen "JBL 2384 ScreenArray horn and adjustable bracket. The ScreenArray horn features a patent design that compensates for high-frequency spreading caused by perforated screens for greatly improved audience coverage."
My speakers will indeed go behind a screen in a baffle wall. How do you like those 2382 horns, and do you still run them at present time? Have you ever compared or do you have any experience with the Seos waveguides?
If you would consider getting rid of those unused 2447 compression drivers then please hit me up, soon if possible!
I am still looking for opinions on the Seos24 versus the JBL 2384? The reason that I am leaning toward the JBL is because it is readily available, and around only $100 each, iirc, compared to the Seos24 witch is over double the price and could take weeks or even months to come in.
Which would be a better mate on a JBL 2384 (or a Seos24) either a JBL 2446 or 2447 or a Radian model of comparable size? Perhaps the 950?
Also, any opinions on adding a tweeter or super tweeter over a big horn with a 2" compression driver? Would a Beyma TPL150 work well over the JBL 2384 horn with either a 2446 or 2447 cd? Is this a worthwhile addition if using these large cd's and horns? What would be another good tweeter to go over the big boy horn and cd, perhaps something cheaper then the TPL150?
Does anyone know where I can purchase the JBL2384 horn? I did a quick search and couldn't find any for sale.
What are the differences between the JBL 2446 and 2447? Are there any other compression drivers in a 1.5" size that can come close to their performance in the $300 price range?
So does anyone else have an opinion on how the Seos24 would compare to the JBL 2384? It appears that the JBL can be had for roughly $100 which is less than half of the Seos24. If I go with the JBL 2384 then I will likely mate it to the JBL 2446 or the 2447, which will at some point be upgraded to use a Be diaphragm.
I wonder how the JBL 2446/2447 would sound in this horn versus the much more expensive Radian950Pb?
I think you could do well with either one. The SEOS has a nice curve to it that naturally reduces diffraction, either wave guide that large should image well and allow a nice low crossover.
It seems that the sound quality from different models/brands of compression drivers are rarely discussed, unlike other drivers, such as dome tweeters, ribbons ect..
With that being said, which do you guys think would sound better, the JBL 2446 or the JBL 2447? What about the more expensive offerings from radian or Faital Pro?
I'm happy with my QSC SC-2150 Waveguides. They use Celestion drivers. 15" woofers, 6.5 mid range 1.4 CD. All the drivers are available via QSC or online.
I am using the Behringer B215xl's for now with great success until I get some JBLs again.
