I'm considering building some speakers for my girlfriend's bday. These will only be playing vinyl records. She doesn't listen to music loud. Her receiver is an Onkyo from probably the '80s. I don't know what the model # is, so I have no idea about the specs on it. I'll try to check in the next few days.
I'm looking at the following from diy sound group: the hitmaker, fusion-6 vibe, and classic II. I know the fusion 6 won't dig as deep, but I'm not sure she needs much below 60-65hz. She listens to classic country and 60's-70's rock records. Does anyone recommend any of these or similarly priced speakers?
I would go with a more traditional some tweeter/mid design over a waveguide/compression driver design, assuming that her room is not too large, and that she doesn't listen at high volume. Look into Zaph audio as they have a website with lots of DIY designs.
I wouldn't want speakers that can't produce low notes. Even albums from the '60s have this and there's no reason to intentionally limit the speakers. I hadn't played vinyl for a long time and the speakers I use are far better than anything I had before, so I'm hearing the music in a totally different way. Most of the albums I have listened to many times sound better than I would have thought and, other than a little background noise (I have always taken extremely good care of them), I don't notice anything lacking in most, compared to CDs. OTOH, I have some really nice cartridges and that makes a difference.
That's what I'm leaning towards. Unfortunately it looks like they're not currently in stock. Hopefully they get back in stock soon. Her bday is August 20. I looked at her receiver. It's an Onkyo TX-26, which has 35wpc.
