+15dB would be approaching 120dB spl levels on the mainspeakers! In that movie, with all the continous screaming and monster noises it would be way way way behind comfortable for most anyone. Unless you are only talking about just running the bass 15dB hot, which might be fun for a short clip, but would still be nothing short of a beating for that particular full movie. Whoa indeed.
I'll break it down so you can understand more clearly

Deaf?
Far from it...at 51 I can still hear 14Khz fine
I can hear my neighbor with "Tourette syndrome" very clearly with his and my windows closed
My ears are very sensitive and they can take a lot of abuse

Insane?
CLEARLY YES! I say that cause ALL my friends think I am.
I have no problems with that!

WOW...Really?
Yes I do have a reference calibrated correctly...I invite you to come and see it for yourself

The above graph was taken at -18MVL... Could go MUCH higher but my mic clips.

My system was calibrated using the "AudioTestDVDv2" DVD that's available here at AVS

I've learned a lot from AVS and have a pretty good idea what I'm doing.

Yes it is extremely loud but I can and I don't...only on very rare occasions
@Archaea , I don't get the purpose of your post AND I did not watch that movie @ +15DB over reference...it was a joke!
As a matter of fact, I've never seen that movie and am NOT interested in it.

FYI, I can play a movie @ 15DB over reference if I wanted to because my referenced system is capable of doing it.

I'd say it's highly unlikely that you can play back a bass heavy "action" movie at 15dB over reference without getting major clipping from your receiver / pre-pro.

As an example, a Denon 4520CI will clip the LFE output at 0db (reference) on the master volume with the subwoofer trim at 0dB with a 0dBFS signal in the LFE channel (around 4.7Vrms). The Pioneer Elite and Onkyo units I've measured have had a few more dB of output capability getting to up ~8Vrms before clipping, but +15dB from reference... I don't see how.

Clipping indeed. I don't use neirfield subs, do the require more power or does it depend on the room?

From what I experienced, you do have to push the sub much harder. But that tactile feedback though.

Vizio M501d-A2R(Calibrated), LG BD-330, Pioneer VSX-524-K, Custom DIY LCR Mains, DIY Sub ( Kicker 10c124, 2.25 ft3, 19 hz tune, powered by xm-sd46x(using only rear channel in bridge mode, 150watts), powered by 400w atx power supply.) Work in progress.

What sub do you have? Amp? How loud were you playing the movie when your sub blew? What did you have your sub trim set to? When I first watch cloverfield, I had a cheap sony sub I think, so I ordered Cloverfield last night and I will watch it again with my current setup. Now my current setup isn't as Badazz as the heavy hitters that have posted in this thread, (such as @Stereodude @Fatshaft @Archaea ) but it will do for now

I'm certainly no heavy hitter. More of an adequate hitter for the SPL levels I listen at (below reference).

You haven't had a sub in seven years?

You should be able to DIY a sub that crushes the HSU. Just throwing that out there. Depending on which HSU sub you're eyeing, the diy sub will cost close to, or be the cheaper option.

There's nothing wrong with that. I've been using mine at least that long. I am in the process of upgrading to SI 18's. But I have had my SVS 12 since 2007. Still going strong.

I find that much less annoying than quoting each post separately as opposed to multi quoting. Just sayin.
