Just did a little work today cutting the holes for the ports into the baffle and getting ready to glue the baffle (backside) to the bottom.

Also, here's a teaser of what I'd somewhat like my cabinet to look like as far as finish and color goes. I found this thread by @jshadzi a while back and I was trying to decide if I wanted to put veneer, laminate, paint or just a finish of stain and clearcoat.
Eminence Lab 15 Ported Subwoofer Build

The beautiful and simple finish of @jshadzi 's cabinet were very attractive. It matched the 5 layered plywood I had picked out too, with a decent looking pine veneer rather than the maple in his enclosure. But the maple is pretty dark and I want mine to have a fairly light color. The maple is beautiful though, mine probably won't look quite as nice.
(@DaveyK - this is the look I'm going for with my cabinet)
I'll post a few pics here of jshadzi's build that really piqued my interest.

Couple more pics. Got the baffle (back side) glued to the bottom piece. Should be about dry now. Used PL Premium this time. I don't think I liked it as much as the PL 510. It was a bit more liquidy and bit more sticky. But it also has the added "chemical" warnings. I felt comfortable using my finger to move excess around when I used the 510 Wood adhesive. But with the PL Premium this seemed ill-advised without gloves (I used a plastic bag). I'd prefer just to use my finger.
Adhesive-wise, strength-wise they seem comparable (for my needs at least), though I'm sure the PL Premium is a superior adhesive. I like the color and texture of the PL510 better too once it's dried. It seems to be a better match for a wood cabinet. So I think I may go back to using the PL510 at least for my exterior gluing.

Also, I had Home Depot cut one of my sheets into four pieces including the two sides of my cabinet. When I got home they had left me with two 26"x21 1/8" pieces instead of two 26"x22" pieces. That 1/16-1/8" that I was missing was gonna make things difficult for assembly, so I went back to the store and talked to about 5 people, but after finally finding the lumber manager, he immediately had them cut me two new pieces at no charge. Very nice!

Any way, here are the pics.

Umm, ASAP :-)

It's going a bit slower than I was hoping, but that seems pretty normal. Almost every step in this project is brand new for me, so I'm trying to make sure I do everything right the first time.
I imagine I MIGHT be able to finish it in a couple more months. I host a movie night at my house every 2 months or so, so that's a pretty good motivation for me to work on it.

Thanks! Yea, I think the measurement was right, I think they just didn't line the blade up correctly.

Well, sadly my receiver doesn't have the LFE+Main option. It's a Pioneer VSX-94TX, a few years old. No matter what I do, whenever I set my mains to Large there is no sound from the subwoofer (except in a select few listening modes like Extended Stereo). I have to set all speakers to Small for the SW Pre-Out to have a signal in most of the audio modes (DTS, Pro Logic, THX, ...). It seems like it is designed like this, just happens to be a model where they didn't offer the LFE+Main setting.

Yes, I did a couple of tests and did end up stripping a screw in the 3/4" plywood pretty easily. That's why I'm planning on adding the pine and using longer screws to make sure things are tight. In my MDF test box, I drilled the holes, then lightly screwed in the screws, barely bottoming them out, then removed the screws, filled the holes with PL adhesive, screwed the screws back in and let the PL dry. This seemed to have done a pretty good job making a solid bite for the screws.

Clamped & Glued

Minor update: Got some of the first inside pieces glued in today. It took quite a bit of work to get them all fitting just right. The ports and the bottom pieces of the smaller enclosures inside the cabinet fit inside the port on the baffle in a pretty tight fit.

Inside glued with clamps and weights

Outside with various clamps

Closeup of one of the ports (they will run along the bottom, then turn up, then run along the top before opening into the cab)

Closeup of the dowels (supports under the smaller interior enclosures, mainly for bracing the bottom panel)

Closeup of the second port

Lunch today (seriously, this is where we bought the pizza we had for lunch today)

Progress Report pt 1

So I've done quite a bit of work on my cabinet over the past couple of months, I just haven't had time to post pics or updates.

Next step was to start putting in the MBM pieces - port and bracing.

Gluing and clamping the bracing and port.
Spoiler!

My bracing from 1 1/2" dowels with cuts to fit them together. Sort of like Lincoln Logs :-)
Spoiler!

All the interior port entrances will have 3" flanges to help reduce port noise and improve airflow though the port.
Spoiler!

And got the sides to the MBMs put in, clamped glued and one of the few pieces I screwed in for good measure.
Spoiler!

Progress Report pt 2

I was worried about the inside of the cabinet absorbing moisture and saw a couple other builds where people sealed the inside of their cabs with resin or other materials to help stiffen up the box and seal it, so started on that here, waiting to install the dowels and put the rest of the cab together before I finish sealing it.

Got the left and right ports for the main enclosure coming together. Took a lot of fine cuts, adjustments and corrections to get them to fit right. These will have a 3" flange too.
Spoiler!

Close up of the cuts on the dowels to fit them together. Did this using a router and trim bit.
Spoiler!

Three pieces fitting together, very snug.
Spoiler!

Mandatory shot before I put those dowels in and close up the cabinet.

Router with flush trim bit working those dowels.
Spoiler!

This took a while, got all the bracing lined up, marked and fit in place, ready to glue and screw. I had to pre-drill all the holes like this, then take everything out, put glue on each piece and put it back together one piece at a time, trying to keep everything lined up.
Spoiler!

Glued, screwed and clamped.
Spoiler!

Sure feels good to make progress.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it!

Disclaimer: I've only built one speaker cabinet before and never done any real woodworking. It was a fiberglass/wood box for a 10" sub in the spare wheel well of my 78 Datsun. I've always been pretty handy/mechanically inclined with cars, bikes, motorcycles, electronics etc.
That's why this first build is taking such a long time, at least it feels long to me.

It's a box!

Small update. Used my straight edge and a sander to get all the bracing and ports that will attach the backside perfectly flat. Just had to sand a few spots down a bit.

Just glued on my last two 6" bracing dowels. The box is face down in this pic, you can see the ports pretty well here.

The backside is ready to glue on. I just ran a thin coat of fiberglass resin over the inside, easier than doing it after it's glued in. Resin is still wet, about to take off the tape, flip it over, apply PL premium and clamp it down.

Bought of couple of new clamps for this part and I'm using a couple of cylinder heads on the top to help with weight/pressure on the top (which will be the back of the box, but really the front of the cabinet - lol)

Everything glued and clamped. It's a box!

What's the purpose of the thin coat of fiberglass resin?

Just personal ease of mind. Seals the wood. The plywood is unsealed cheap pine, so it seems like it might absorb moisture. Just preventing any deterioration.
Also, others have used resin to increase stiffness on plywood and MDF.

Making a lot of progress these days.

Test fitting the drivers, only had to do some slight trimming on the dowel braces for them to fit perfectly.

Man, that 18" driver looks and feels so good. Solid piece of equipment and bigger than anything I've had before.

I got the top of the cabinet put on tonight too and I have some pics, but can't seem to upload them at the moment. So it's a complete box now! Very exciting! Looks really good.

Top side of cabinet glued and clamped. Should be dry by now, so today I'll do some sanding and routering with flush trim bit and roundover bit.

I also bought some Wood Filler and Minwax Natural Stain and Semigloss Poly-urethane for finishing.
