18' drivers under $300 ?

hello. i am kicking around the idea of building 2 new subs. i want 18's.
and i am figuring ported = i have a pretty large room, bout 14'x 40+ x 9'.
i have 2 ep2500's and a dcx2496.

anyway. googling doesn't come up with much.
right now the UM18-22 18" Ultimax is the only one on the list.
but i know there has to be others.
and"in stock" is preferred.

thanx

If you're going with the Ultimax in a ported box then you'll want to go pretty large, i.e. full Marty size 9-12 cf. The Dayton RSS460 is another option - it won't dig as low as the UM18 but is a respectable driver for sure, and it can be done in a smaller ported box. I know SI was in the process of releasing a v.2 of their HT18 driver in the ~$175 ballpark, but I'm not sure what the timeline is for that. Might want to email Nick at SI (or PM - @Electrodynamic ). The original HT18 was probably the hands-down favorite for bang-for-the-buck 18" driver, though it also preferred large boxes if you went ported. Other than those 2 Daytons and the SI, I'm not too sure of many options in the sub $300 range. Soundsplinter RL-p18 runs $420 and the Pierce 2k looks to still be on sale for $450 (normal $500).

For thoroughness, for Ficar audio IB3 18 is less than $300. It is intended for infinite baffle applications, but may work OK in a big ported enclosure. BIG ported enclosure... although I noticed a lic of the new version whivh visually looks to have a larger and I presume stronger motor. Haven't looked up specs to see if thats actually the case. If so would make a bit more flexible than the previous version.

Qts is very high for a ported box and power handling is low, it models very weird even in like 12 cubic feet. If he went with Fi I think the SSD at $299 would be better - Qts .45 and 1250W power handling, much better suited for ported and models pretty decently in ~7-8 cubic feet tuned to 20 Hz.

Yeah, I guess ported demands on the motor may bee too great even in a large enclosure. Huge sealed becomes impractical. Good to know Ficar has another option at that price... haven't checked it out, but I'm guessing much less excursion compared to the IB3 line, probably enough so to make it hard to justify vs the Ultimax.

What are you using it for? Music or movies?

I was underwhelmed with 2 UM18s but then I listen mostly to music and would prefer stronger 25hz-150 vs strong below 20hz.

I compared 1 B&C 18RBX100-4 against 1 UM18 against 2 CSS SD12 in WINISD and attached it below

movies. if music i would do sealed. which gets me to thinking = what would a UM18 do in my 5.5 box sealed up ? would it hurt to try ? if i build new boxs, my current boxs would be about worthless. and if throwing the um18's in there for the mean time, i could at least experiment real quick.

The si18 v1 was great. I have one that I have abused and is now going to dad in a 11cuft box
I have another one that has never been used so far besides tapping on a 9 volt..
If u can wait the v2 should be great for the cost/performance.
I u were me I would save and go for more SPL into the deep and get bass shakers for movies. U only live once....

i just built a box for two of these. unfortunately I have a small room so I went sealed. but if i had the space I would definitely go ported. even a 10 ft box will give you a nice boost over a sealed config.

and that would be like 48x24x20 approx

64 base level speakers $10k
28 height speakers $10k,
14 subwoofers $10k
90% of the movie sound coming from the center channel - priceless.

You didn't go with the 21's dude what the heck hahaha, I myself have been thinking of building some bigger ported cabinets for my IXL 18's but then I need an amp with DSP or add a DSP unit to my amp so maybe sometime in the future
