It's finally happening! 2 Full Marty's with 18" LMS Ultra 5400's!

Been sitting on these drivers for a while and its now time to put them to work. Cabinet construction starts first of the week. The plan is to finish them to match my Polk towers (silver baffle/black cabinet). Check back for pictures.

Your setup convinced me to go ported instead of sealed. My room is on a slab and I didn't want to spend a ton of money on amplification to get into the low teens sealed. I'm sure this will be more than enough with also using my other LMS/passive radiator sub as well.

Nice choice! Wish I had the room for ported subs, sealed will have to suffice for the moment..
Looking forward to your build

Making progress...

Builder is doing a great job and already has both enclosures ready for final assembly and finishing. Next up is to work out the bracing strategy. BTW, port braces are just stuck in the slot in the photos (i know it looks like they are inserted wrong). They haven't been permanently mounted yet.

I wouldn't sell the 5100s until you got a chance to compare them to the ultras in these cabs. You might like the 5100s better. They would probably trade some low end efficiency for some top end.

He is selling a pair of 5100s in the classifieds. If only I could sneak a G out of the account.

You guys prefer the sound of the 5100 over the 5400?

I've never heard either. Both have enough of a reputation to trust they're both really good. But really good at two slightly different things. You win either way.

5100 has increased sens, but lower power handling... 5100 better above 55hz, 5400 better below. 5400 lower distortion. I wouldn't get rid of em, but if you are, I know Kyle was looking for some, you should try to hit him up. If you need his email let me know.. dunno if he's still looking, but worth a shot.

Is Kyle trying to stock pile them or something?

I know he was selling some of his many months ago. I would have bought them then if I had the money. Still my favorite driver for my horn designs.. Only other option a custom driver from Funk.

Are these enclosures being made by yourself or someone else?

I ask because you mentioned builder.

Someone is building them for me. There is no way I could do this myself.

If the cabs are done before you find a buyer for the 5100s, you could put one of each in each cab, and test them back to back. I'm guessing they'll be very similar, but who knows. Not many have had the chance to compare the two.

You're gonna be happy either way.

bracing doesn't look to have much holding it to the wall. I'd be wary. I like to affix small brace pieces to the wall and the brace so there's more surface area.

It looks to me like there are pocket screws on the bracing.

Correct. There are pocket screws and glue on each brace.

I agree. I have 4 5400 ultras in ported enclosures and with real power it is stunning how clean 'loud' can be.

I've got them home and setup. Next thing to get is a minidsp but running from with the Onkyo calibration for now (tx-rz900). Needless to say they shake the whole house and can get stupid loud! More updates to come.

Most professional, can't wait to hear what you think of them. Some graphs would be nice too.
