Franken project tactile nearfield

More donations from the island of misfit audio equipment.....

My brother dropped off 2 cheap generic 15 inch subs........cast basket, low excursion etc.

He also dropped off a BGW amp ....900 watts or so, its old and has to weigh 60 pounds, probably cause a brown out when it hits 900 watts.......anyway.

Since it was all free, I was thinking getting a couple of cheap 40 dollar ported boxes from Amazon and running these nearfield for a little tactile action directly behind the seats.

Here is where the OCD rabbit hole disorder kicks in,....sure I could just grab the cheap 40 dollar boxes.......2.6 cubic feet, tuned to the high 30`s and be happy right........

But I am now thinking I could get the much larger boxes and maybe get some more performance out of them.....

So we have the cheapest frugal option of a sigle box for duals vented at 65 bucks shipped...

https://www.amazon.com/Power-Dual-15...5+inch+sub+box

This one is 48 bucks, a single box single woofer...a little more versatile in placement....

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IFEFQJI..._t2_B00IFECQXC

Then the big box single, single driver at 100 bucks.....4.2 cubic feet approx

all the boxes are approx the same high 30`s tune.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0013MYX7A..._t3_B00BIFWHO8

Not sure which box to do since I have no info on these cheap drivers.......

My frugal side thinks get the cheap box and be happy with whatever performance you get, then my OCD rabbit hole lovin side thinks ,get the big box!

Any advice ?

I think one driver is a rockwood and the other is a blackwidow or some other low shelf thing.........probably about the same quality as a cheap pyle brand 15.

I could not find the exact drivers or any T/S specs.........cheap low xmax drivers.......single voice coil, unknown ohms etc etc etc.

Perfect project for" the just gotta do something with the mid-spring crazies" . .

your DMM should tell you the ohms . .

the 9 volt battery test should verify they're still good . . or close to it.

the amp has no EQ?

for $100, 2 full sheets of reasonably good ply . . what could you find to build at this site, maybe a VBSS variant . .

you want to be busy, NO?

Run rabbit ,! run! "turn around and dig(build) another one"

or get 1 big one and one small one.

they may not want to play nice together in the same box . .

interesting

LOL...exactly !

I can run this thru one or 2 of the 2x4dsp channels to tune it........I was thinking HPF 40hz...LPF 80hz and let it dig untill it sounds good or the magic smoke escapes.

Then if I even like what happens, go get a couple decent 15s for the boxes.

I can justify 80 bucks for 2 boxes and little to no work, but at 100 bucks a box, I start thinking thats close to the new SI 18`s I am going to get.

I think the cheap dual box that ported is 2 seperate chambers and that center front facing port would dump right between the backs of the dual recliner and set on my current nearfield sub putting the 15 right at back height.........

If I can keep the magic smoke in them, I could always dump a dual 15 box with drivers for what I paid for the box, since the drivers were free.....

I have a pair of clark TT`s showing up in a few days...........then in approx a week or so the SI 18`s will be in stock !!!!!!!!!

It would have been so easy if I just told him......... NO, leave the drivers and amp on the island of misfit audio.

HT is a lot like a boat, except nothing actually breaks and you replace or upgrade it anyway.....

If you wanna go really cheap on a prebuilt box checkout your local classifieds. I've seen similar boxes for less than half what Amazon wants.
