The DIYSG Magnum 12 General Discussion Thread

I figured I would start a new general discussion thread for the magnum 12 inch driver that DIYSG is selling. I feel this driver is going to gain a lot of attention soon as it already has and there should be a place where build links and general talk about this driver is talked about.

MBM'S------SPEAKER KITS----------SUBWOFFER DUTY-------NEARFIELD BASS/MBM BOXES--------------

------------------------WHATS POSSIBLE WITH THESE?????????------------------------------------------

This driver looks like it can be used in all different types of applications ranging from mbm's and now maybe speaker designs/kits as youtube videos are coming out with talk about this magnum.

Mtg90 and tux have talked about this and have some videos that I would like to link including videos I've taken myself.

I personally just bought two B-stock Magnum drivers and am really happy with them as I really can't find anything cosmetically wrong with them besides maybe a tad bit more glue around the dust cap. Here's a few pictures....

What the depth of the driver??? Here ya go----

What's the cut out for the driver----11.1 tonight I'll take my jasperjig and get the exact size but it should be 11-1/16 I'm thinking.

Outside diameter of the driver 12.4"

Xmax-9.15mm Say what! on this 12'' inch driver---yes SIR!

Sensitivity 93.5db 1watt per 1 meter

Voice cool- 3"inches

Magnet weight--109oz of American muscle

Frequently response--35hz.-800hz.

It looks like a great driver. The specs look to be rather close to the 3012LF-4 although I haven't seen full T/S specs yet.

Along with my MBM's I'd like to build a shallow nearfield that is tuned to maybe 30'ish hurts with a dual driver cab and a 4ohm load. I was modeling it earlier but I'm now at work so I'll post later to better show what I was thinking.

Great idea on the thread. Ill post a picture of what Im working on with it tonight. Ill also try to do another video about it with a focus more on low frequency. That wont be for a while though.

My original ideas for these:

The Maximus-12 that Jeff Bagby already worked on. I think only 4 or 5 people have built them. There was a cheaper version but no one seemed interested in it so I took it off the site. There's also a dual woofer version that I never put up because it was a bit more money (I'm going to build a bamboo pair for my living room).

A monster 1299 type speaker kit using these 12's versus the Delta 12B's. But we didn't work on one because the cost might get a bit too high.

A speaker with two Magnum-12's flanking an 8", 10", or 12" coaxial. Or a single Magnum-12 and single coaxial.

An old school speaker similar to the old JBL L112, Pioneer S-910, or Cerwin Vegas. A high end version with a ribbon.

Midbass modules.

The reason the other designs weren't started was because not many of the Maximus-12's were built and I just wasn't sure if there was a demand for any other kits. Unfortunately not many of these woofers have been ordered.

If anyone has ideas, we can start working on something.

I would be interested in seeing how this compares to the Titan 615 in a similar configuration, frequency response, sensitivity and price wise.
I'm trying to figure out my hopefully soon to be home theater build and am pretty sure I'll be using something from DIYSG. Would like one piece fronts instead of small speakers with MBMs due mostly to expense for separate amplification.

Well possibly we can get some designs that use it passively so the extra amps arent necessary. I think a lot of people are in your shoes not wanting the clutter and expense of additional amps.

Great thread idea!

I've been playing with these (in the sims) for a couple weeks. They sure do look like they produce a lot of bass!

My favorite model is dual 12's in 7-10cuft tuned anywhere from the upper 20's to the low 40's. Just depends on how deep you want to go with them.

Would you mind explaining more about this crossover. I'm not aware of such a thing. I'm assuming there's a way to connect to the Fusion 8s passively using the existing speaker wires. Interesting

Yes yes yes!! I would like to see that to. What if two of the magnums were in slot ported boxes like JTR does it and have the waveguide in the middle or have these like lukeman did his big towers in three sections. You could build these so many ways and or configurations. Have them sealed who knows but I'm getting excited after seeing tuxes video and also hearing them in person. These drivers now seem to be getting very popular I can now see people using these more in there rooms. Who doesn't like the specs on these they measure really nice.

The thread discusses what Jeff Bagby did for his Kairos and Continuum to make them three ways and states the crossover approach is universal. A link to his box folder with the paper he wrote on this is in the thread.

Before running across DIYSG, I was seriously thinking of going with Paul Carmody's Tarkus speaker build.
This driver could be used like that with a smaller speaker on top. Only thing needed would be the crossover for the midbass enclosure.

@Erich H

@tuxedocivic

Erich you mentioned putting these in the 1299s. Being as mine are sealed, would I gain anything? Would the crossover need to be redone?

I'm already considering building 2 larger ported cabs.....because I'm curious to learn what I left on the table.

Thanks.

I should of just bought 6 instead of two and put them in my 1299's, opportunity missed 😢

They aren't a drop in for the 1299. Besides, the delta 10B provides a higher level of efficiency when considering above 80hz. No need for people to panic

Im gonna have to say the same as doing a smaller version of the TITAN615. Some of us LOVE the design BUT don't have the space to fit those bad boys. A smaller version for a smaller HT ROOM. Apart from that a smaller version might have a better WAF. Especially if its done to match her living room furniture. TITAN612????
Thanks for the thread @eng-399 .

Hmmm..... anyone have a WinISD file for this?

Wondering if I use these to compliment my speakers I'm looking to build. Focused on music so only really wanting to get to 40hz in room which should be the lower end of these, and with a fair amount of kick....

But I need a WinISD file to verify lol....

There is a Titan design with these woofers in the works. It uses two of them but I think a single driver version is not out of the question if demand for that is high enough, you just loose 6dB of sensitivity compared with the dual woofer design.

Very Nice Matt this is very exciting news! Wondering would two of these drivers work in a bigger slot loaded cabinet with the waveguide in the middle like how JTR has there towers? These drivers do go pretty low.

Since Matt is designing a Titan kit with these drivers would it be ok once there finished to have a GTG at my place to show these off of course with Matt's blessing to. It would be nice for around 20-30 guys hear these along with the rest of all the other diysg kits that normally show up to.

Certainly fine with me.

The dual 12" Titan was thought up over a year ago along with the 615 but we chose to start with the 15" first. We were reluctant to do a dual Magnum-12 model because the cost is a bit high due to the woofers. The single 12" woofer model would likely be built more, but who knows.
