DIYSG Magnum MBM Build/ 2.1 build for the wife's bday

Happy birthday to the wifey!

I have till the 27th. to Complete this build I hope I make it! I can't think of a better bday present than some subs and speakers for her hehe... On a serious note she asked for this so it was my job to think something up for her and build it.

The setup will be.

2- Magnum 12 inch drivers

2-pispeakers bass reflex 11

1- inuke 3k dsp amp

1-Pioneer Elite VSX-92TXH AVR

1- Vinyl record player from music direct MMF- 2.2 Turntable

This build is going to have two Magnum 12'' drivers from DIYSG in two, three cubic ft. slot ported boxes tuned to 23 hz. This will be placed on the sides of our tv console. I don't have much width so the boxes will be 10.25 inches wide 20 inches in depth and 34 inches high.

Down the road I'll build Statements 11 if they will fit to replace the PI speakers....

Here we go
filtor1, pgwalsh, JCJetta and 2 others like this.

Looks like, so you are building a set of Pi speakers with a set of Flex 12's?

Sounds awesome!

Yep your right but these will be a different shape than what Matt has come up with due to size restrictions from or tv Council. the wife likes to listen to music all the time and wanted a record player to start playing her favorite music on vinyl records so I figured she needed some decent speakers and a good mbm to back those bookshelf speakers up. So after hearing the flex-12's at my GTG meet I thought this would be a perfect match.

So to save some money I figured I would design the box with a slot port instead of Percision ports and have a target tune to each of them between 20-25hz so at night if we put a movie on these could handle some lower frequencies to. Sometimes the kids just want to stay upstairs and watch a movie instead of going in the basement to watch something.

Down the road I'll figure something out for surrounds but for now this is her 2.1 setup.

One thing I'm struggling with is which direction should I have the sub facing???? The outside walls or face the magnum towards the tv entertainment center.

So you are sitting the Mag 12 on the floor 1 on each side of the TV entertainment center on and then up higher will be the PI 2 speakers? I am kind of lost

I was googling PI 11 ad in eleven, not two I figured out PI 2 after googling Statement 11 and finding Statement 2 and then it clicked

HTPC, Sony 40es, 120" Silver Ticket, 7702mkii, Sunfire Amp 225w, JBL 590, JBL 520

PSA XS30, Seaton Submersive, 2 Um-18 8cf sealed, Outlaw Ultra x 12, Kappa Pro 18LF, BFM Tuba 60 horn, B&C 18TBW100 6cf 41hz, 34hz, 28hz tune

iNuke 3000 & 6000 DSP's, Crowson Motion Actuator

Looking good! Will be just a "slight improvement" over the Bose. Gotta ask: What's the blacklight on the table for? Inquiring minds want to know....

Yes the magnums will be on the floor next to the tv entertainment center and the Pi speakers "bass reflex 2's will sit on top of those. I need to re word this thread it's confusing. I redid the pispeakers last week and now working on the magnums.

Thanks Michael lol it's going to be a big improvement over the bose setup. I bought those at an estate sale back In The day for a cheap.

The blacks lights were for my kids... there little and for me to get a good listening session in during the day I put those on and they call it a dance party

I'm finally grasping your dilemma lol.

I'm not sure if facing the driver to your wall is a good idea. Are you going to have enough area in front of the ports?

Why not try it both ways? If the speaker connection terminal is on the side of the Mag 12 cabinet which will be considered the "back" you could try them firing "out" and to try them firing "in" by switch them from left side to right side. Right? and you can flip them also upside down to see if having the port closer to the floor or up "top" makes any difference in the FR.

Once I get home I think I'll try and place the sub to the front of the box maybe I'll be able to some how fit it in there. The port is facing the front and is 2.25 inches high by 27 inches long. I'm going going to experiment once these are done. Working a 16 hour day today so in the morning I'll get some more panels on and hopefully the slot port in place to.

DIYSG Magnum MBM Build/ 2.1 build for the wife's bday

Made a little progress today after a 16 hour shift at work but I now see the end of the road for this build. Here's a few things I did so far.

I cut slot port pieces and glued them to the box.

Next I placed some scrap mdf and through some weights on top for it to dry tonight.

In the morning I figure out the bracing and put the lid on top.

I'm thinking on making a decorative 1/2 piece of mdf to the baffle where the sub gets mounted so the driver is flush mounted and looks cool to. Still not sure yet on what shape hopefully tonight I figure something out on paper.

I'm in awe. Your a cab-building Terminator. I have a few builds going on presently but at this point I have to cry uncle. The only way I can attempt to compete with you is to go CNC. Even then I may need two.

One thing to be aware of with vinyl and vented-box speaker systems or subs is that records with any warp at all, combined with phono preamps having good low-frequency extension have the potential to generate lots of subsonic signals. It becomes essential to have a high-pass filter somewhere in the signal path to prevent large cone excursions at frequencies below box tuning. 33 1/3 RPM is about 0.56 Hz, so a signal created by a warp in the record will have that as its fundamental frequency. Also, thumps can occur from lifting up the tonearm in the record's lead-out groove, where the stylus position moves rapidly toward the end compared to the normal record groove spacing.

Thanks for advice I never thought of that. I'll make sure the wife keeps the volume level down when she plays some music on it. Don't get me wrong I'll be playing stuff on it to but I'll definitely have a low pass set and warn her about how she can damage the drivers if the level it up and starting and stopping each record.

The box may look ugly now since it's in its rough state but I can make this look really nice once complete.

I decided on a diamond shape for the second baffle on the side where the driver will be flush mounted. I figured this would be a good laugh since she's getting audio stuff for bday instead of..... well a diamond or jewelry lol.

The bottom cabinets are the vbss cabinets one of them is Mtg90's original one so I duplicated a second to have a matching one before this build all got started. I'm going to spray all four cabinets at the same time.

Am I remembering correctly that these were the star of one of your gtg's and you had very tactile bass from across the room?

Yep Matt brought these over all wrapped up and played them last. Everyone was asking him what subs are behind the black cloth. When he hooked these up These Magnums drivers filled the room with out any problems. Everyone was like whattttttt!!!! What drivers are those and tell us about the box there in. These drivers really make a lot of sound I'm surprised there isn't a lot more builds out there with. The tactile bass was huge from two 12's and they were so clear! I can't wait to get these going!

More pictures in a few hours once the glue dries but here's where these are at right now. I have a small crack in the mdf next to the port so I put some wood glue in there and clamped it. Hopefully the one box will be dry soon so I can re sand and put a round over on all the sides. More pictures coming tonight.

Was the sound tactile or the port air? I have 2 mags in my basement and I'm building the boxes in a few weeks. However, looks like my port will be downfacing. I'm hoping for some TR at 8'

I'm very excited to get these rolling. I just ordered a crown xls 2002!

Both from what remember we blew out a candle with these from the ports 8 ft away throwing a 20hz. Sine wave. I think we did this to the pa460 vbss box as well. It's been a year...
