Gotta love the overall sexiness of the RLp. Smooth, black anodized aluminum cone. Tall rubber surround, oh, I love those. Very well built. Can take lots of power and it dissipates heat very well.

Seriously. I think I'll just try it sealed instead of the Maelstrom or try to keep the ported fridge. It just looks so awesome.

Sure. Why not? Wood is cheap and a sealed box for the RLp couldn't take more than one sheet of MDF.

When Sherv had updated us all on his setup with everything sealed I did take a few minutes to think about how that would work out for me. In my case, I wouldnt see any benefit from going sealed. I can easily fit a tall tube where a 24" cube could go so I am staying vented for the time being...

You might like yours sealed, or maybe not. It definitely won't belt out the same SPL down low but you can dump more power into it.

On a side note: I recently turned up my sub +3db for everything. For some reason, I never got it to sound right like that. Too much bass before. Now, suddenly (EQ change, new screen maybe?) it sounds really good. Am afraid to try WotW or the Haunting with these settings. Although if I do I will give any new impressions.

Mega bumpage time!

Look what arrived at my front door this week.

Bought these used from user tjambro over at HTS. Same RLpd4's that I have. Plan is to use all four for a quad sealed setup. Still need to build the cabs and get another amp though...

The journey begins.... again.

You're a bad influence on me, Scott, you know that?

The RL-P18 is such a gorgeous driver. I love the aluminum cone and the six spoke frame and the tall rubber surround. No regrets on this end, that's for sure.

Nope. Serious lag-time on switching these to quad sealed. At some point I decided it would be a wonderful idea to go quad sealed once I finish my new speakers. These projects have snowballed into a whole umbrella of projects that I will do all at the same time. Feels like it has been forever.

Made some serious progress this summer. Getting so close now, I can taste it.

Do you have interest in LLT's? Kind of surprised to see my thread get bumped. Discussion on them died a long time ago. Not that I have any objections though.

maybe as some sort of post mortem, you could share the thinking/reasoning behind your decision to abandon your earthquake creators in favor of four sealed subs.

lots of folks may be confused by your decision.

My decision to move to quad sealed is mostly because I wanted to have a more "manageable" subwoofer system AND more bass. My HT room is quite small and I crammed some HUGE subwoofers in it. Because of the layout of the room/furniture I have little options for sub placement. I've tried to think of creative ways to place these huge cabs around the room and it just isn't going to possible in any realistic way.

EDIT: If I were to have a larger room, the sealed set up would probably never occur. The performance from the LLT's is hard to beat in every regard. I would love to have two more of these LLT's if I had more room to work with.

I would say that this is about 75% or more of the decision to switch is because of this.

Other gains come from traits inherent to the sealed alignment. Not that I had to now but I will REALLY not have to worry about a high pass filter or bottoming or anything with sealed. Will be interesting to see if I can get good response down to 5hz.

Definitely NOT the best choice for those with a tight bank account (also why it's taking me so long to do) but this was the next best step up for me.

If there is anything else that anyone would like to know or ask, shoot me a line or post in here. I welcome any discussion.

It's been in the works for some time. I've mentioned it here and there all over in this section. Should have been done with a long time ago but I thought I would lump it in together with some new speakers and that is what has been holding up everything. Things are coming together now though so... yeah.

I don't agree at all with all the SteveC hate around here that came about a couple years ago. He knows his stuff and I agree with many of his virtues on vented designs. Really wish he still posted here. Yet at the same time I very much agree with Bosso's view on sealed designs and want to give them a shot. I have 'been there, done that' with vented now and with nowhere else to push these alignments ... I'd thought I'd give sealed a try. I have never owned a sealed subwoofer system so it should be pretty darn interesting to see how it all turns out and if I even like it.

Damn good to see you are still around, Sherv. Hope you and your family are recovering alright from the water damage.

Since this thread has been bumped, I will go ahead and post. Really like the Bose speaker next to the sub. At least size wise it looks that way. You need to hurry up with your new speakers. Your current mains have an inferiority complex.

"I don't agree at all with all the SteveC hate around here that came about a couple years ago."

a big part of it was because he was wed to a single design and poopooed everything else. same with bosso now.

mr. danley never said his design was universally optimal. he asked some folks what they would like and built a cab that delivered on that.

i kind of wish that we could get away from the "one is universally better than the other" type discussions. different folks have different goals and are willing to make different tradeoffs.

and scott, how on god's good earth are you going to be able to create a sealed configuration that will keep pace with your new mains? won't you need about 4 sealed subs to keep up with *each* main? pretty soon your room will look like TheEar's. not that that is a bad thing...:-)

Maaaannnnn, I have no clue. Preferrably, there WOULD be quad 18's per main but that just aint gonna work for me and my pocketbook. Not sure how I'd fit it all in here anyway.

Not sure I need to have the LFE system be so much more capable than these mains. I mean, obviously that would be the point but when quad 18's sealed can do in excess of 120dB's at 20hz... how much more do I need? Maybe a crap ton! I have no idea yet. I mean, I still have gas in the tank with my dual LLT's. It's just that I am not happy with the mains I have now and they cannot keep up with the subwoofer system.

Having mains that can exceed the capability of my subwoofer system may be what I needed all along. Maybe I won't even need quad subs. I don't push reference level often (granted its because my speakers limit out when approaching this level...) but maybe I will more often when I have capable speakers.

Just going to trust my gut that this system will kick ass either way I go.

Btw, I may even get another two RLp18's if Sound Splinter can get around to having them manufactured again.

nah, you just need a system that can hit your performance goals.

i bet you'll be happy if you can put sufficient power on your new mains.

the big ported subs should do just fine. maybe cross the show at 50hz or so.

Got bored today and played around with my OmniMic system, which is awesome btw. Totally forgot to ever measure my damn twins with it. Lol! redface.gif

Here is the system FR with no EQ:

It flattens up with a single filter on the BFD except for that dip in the upper 40's. Most likely room/listening position related. EDIT: Sorry, that was left at 1/6 smoothing.

Here is another with the single filter engaged on the BFD and 1/12 smoothing.

More than likely could be fixed with an extra sub or two placed in some other spots in the room but... that will come later down the road.

given what you are planning, you still might end up with some sort of suckout based on room dimensions that can be fixed with absorption. i was going to say we'll cross that bridge when we come to it, but you will be dropping so many nukes that there probably won't be any bridges left. :-)

You need to run that distortion curve at more than that SPL. How about 100dB and 110dB distortion sweeps?

I should be measuring my rig this weekend with my new CSLabs calibrated mic and the new REW that does distortion curves so I can see what I am getting without having to do individual tones....should be revealing.

BTW - don't suckouts SUCK?

This tired old thread still floating around the ether? biggrin.gif

Sorry to hear about all of the sucking going on there. What are your room dims Scott? I forget. Don't feel bad I have dealt with a major suckout at 30Hz for years.

Jesus man, I had no idea you were talking about going to quads back in 08/09... Been a long time coming for this project. Can't wait to watch something in there once you're done. Just have to decide what. At the rate this is going, DKR will probably be out on BR and we can watch that. biggrin.gif

Yeaaaahhh... tongue.gif

The rough dimensions of the room are ~10ftwide (with the room ~11ft wide at the front where the speakers/subs/screen are) x 19ft long (not counting the closest in the back) x 9.5ft tall. Approximate cubic footage is a pinch over 2,000cuft or very similar to the total size of MKtheater's room.
