To start, boxes were better packed with no bouncing around of the contents. Next, cones were neater and did not have white residue all over them. Also, the cones were painted completely black with no visible areas that were missing paint. The glue on the surround was neater and no finger prints were on the cone. The 5400's had lots of permanent finger prints. These may not be big things, but I guess if you plan on charging more and getting more, I would guess they mean a lot. Hope this helps.

Dan, I think this setup is going to be superb. I stacked the boxes 3 high and 2 wide in my room where the subs are going, and, the size is very intimidating. It is shorter and wider than what will be built, but it does give me some idea of how the finished product will fit in the room. Hopefully, I will be getting on with it soon. The drawings are wonderful.

Thanks,

Robert

Amp wise and power supply wise...some thoughts...
Take a look at the Face Audio F-2000TX. This is what I am using in the system having compared a bunch of big amps including the RMX-5050 while searching for a new amp line. One reason I like it is that it has no high pass filter...flat to near zero. It is more stable than the 5050 into a low impedance load (look at power output at 2 ohms to compare power supplies). It is also gorgeous in terms of build quality...at least for a pro amp. The 5050 is awesome...the F-2000TX is awesomer. Of course, it is also dearer

Regarding voltage...when I was originally comparing amps, we had dedicated 20 amp lines and most of the uber amps were crapping out playing sustained bass notes. Once I decided on the Face audio and picked up the line, I rewired for twin dedicated 30 amp lines and reterminated the amp cords with 30 amp plugs (they have 10 ga power cables so it is legal). HUGE difference. The low frequencies went from potent to flat out ominous. Unquestionably worth doing if you are going with an amp that powerful.

Hey Soundood,
the 5050's are gonna loaf along at 8 ohm mono. This will keep dampening factor up and current draw down, they'll never even come close to breaking a sweat. There was lots of debate about it earlier in the thread, but in the end it appears Robert is getting a solid deal locally. And he already has his rack full of QSC amps to match the 5050's.

qsc rmx 5050 like most big amps, will be at its best with 230v 20 amp circuit, but this is factory set on this amp, the internal jumpers are hard to get at, but current limits are easily modded

Well, it seems that I figured out how to post the pictures, so if anyone is interested, I will start to post the pictures of the build as soon as I get this thing going. I was on vacation for the last two weeks, and getting back to all of the work has been a big time consumer. I posted the pictures so I might get a little kick in the butt from others to get this thing going. Tell me what you think.

Thanks to all,

Robert

Hey Dan, Thanks for the design help. I am going to give it a real good shot and take my time with it. I really appreciate the help.

Does anyone have any input as to whether the 5400's need to be supported at the motor, or is simply ok to mount the driver in the baffle.

Thanks,

You definitely don't "need" support for the magnet. However, I added it both of my designs as an added measure of prevention in case of a heavy jarring of the cabinet. You just never know what could happen, your buddy's hand slips when moving the cabinet, etc...That 75lb motor acting as a lever can exert some serious force on any fasteners.

Of course, t-nuts go a long way toward limiting that possibility.

Given the choice though, I would use a support.

So what do you think. I think that the final product will look pretty cool. I hope I get the visceral feel I am looking for. Like I said before, I am not really after high spl's, but I want my system to "grab" listeners-if you know what I mean. Last night, I was watching Pink Floyd- The Wall dvd and my sound pressure meter mostly never went above 75-85 db, but some scenes had about 102-104 db sustained output and then back to 80ish. When the 102-104 db bass line came in, I took notice. That is why I know how loud it was, because I went back and replayed the scenes. So I can just imagine extending 2-2 1/2 octaves lower must be incredible. Does anyone have an experience like this -ie a before and after new huge subwoofer addition?

Thanks,

Robert
