Manufacturers Weigh in on iPad
By Steve Crowe
How will the iPad affect home automation?

Will the home automation industry be forever changed with tomorrow's introduction of the iPad?

Can Apple make home automation more mainstream?

How will the iPad affect pricing of touchscreens?

To shed some light on these questions and others, we asked home automation manufacturers: "What are your thoughts about the iPad?"

Here's what they had to say.

SmartLabs
"iPad will have marginal impact. Netbooks have been out for a while and are cheap. Touch screen interfaces have also been around for a while."

Savant
"An industry game changer! The days of making margins on expensive touchpanels are winding down. This is a fundamentally different business model that we all have to adapt to."

Cinemar
"While the iPad looks like it is highly talked about it, it may not actually be the best solution available. There are many other Tegra2-based products coming to market that will run Windows 7 and be at the same if not lower price point than the iPad. At the same time, we are making strides to develop an application for it."

Funny, "....the ipad doesn't change a thing, keep buying our 1k dollar touch panels which don't do half as much....."

Home automation in general is a ripoff, high margins on fundamentally basic equipment are the plague that has kept it out of the mainstream.

Home Automation needs affordable solutions that work, not a hard business model.

Don't waste time reading signatures.....

I thought the iPad was a great idea, until I saw that it had no USB port... That is a critical missing item.

I think something that would be in between the size of the iPAD and a cell phone would be great. The iPad is a tad to large.

But no way to connect any peripherals and no USB port is absurd.

The iPad both the ability to connect peripherals and connect via USB via its iPod docking connector. In addition, it can send audio and video out that port so why does it need a bunch of ports like a PC when it has one that does everything? I think the design is both elegant and highly functional.

No Flash.

Everything controlled by Steve Jobs the way he wants it.

Absurdly expensive for what it is.

No immediately accessible USB.

Proprietary everything... no replaceable battery.

My only thought was... unless you want to burn some money... why? Style over substance, par for the course with Apple which is why I have stayed clear of their products after loving them for a long time. It's like a big money suck.

Why?

Three little words - "it just works"
