I have owned this unit for 11 years and have not had any problems until now. When turning on the unit it immediately turns off. This happens with or without the remote. Any ideas on how to remedy this situation?

that's the protection circuitry kicking in. There's a fault on one of the boards and the set is detecting it,then powering down to protect the CRT's ( tubes) from being spot burned. It could be anything, a bad neck-board on the back of one of the tubes, A video board, or even a power supply. You would need to get a manual, then find out of there are "error light" indicators somewhere on the set that would narrow down the failure, then go from there.
As a layman, with no electronic background or repair manual, about the only thing you could do is take the back off and look for swollen capacitors that are bulging out and leaking. like this

Sometimes replacing leaking caps will get the set working again, but other times the failed cap causes a chain reaction of failures in the circuit.

You just turned it on and it was suddenly broke?

I mean is there no history of a problem getting worse and worse?

Did you not violently move it? Or hear or smelled anything while you turned it on?

The TV has been in it's present location for the last seven years and has not been moved. I t just started acting up and would turn on sometimes and stay on and sometimes would turn it self off immediately after turning it on. I figured it was just showing it's age and had a faulty switch. I have yet to open it up and look inside but will soon!
