When you're looking at the picture on your screen, how does black really look compared to the black we're seeing in your screenshot?
That's one thing I wasn't able to depict in my Epson LCD screenshots...

The "black" letterbox bars were really gray, yet they show up in the GIFs as perfect black.

MM, what's your experience on "blacks" from different projectors and different screens?

If your PJ has a Cr of over 1400:1, your blacks and greys will be right on the money if you DO match up screen with PJ as well. Of course, a great Cr PJ shooting on a High Contrast screen will have deep, "CMRA" blacks (...the new standard?) but white will go south, into the depths of Mordor.

That's where a white screen finally pays off. For "spec" performance, the right "white" surface will let a 1400:1 Cj endowed Pj place an excellent CR level and image on the wall. As perfect as a "Tailored for Blacks screen? No. But easily better than what has gone before without extensive "Post" image processors. X1's go a long way down that road. That's why so many "Starters" luv 'em

X1's are spiffy little Pjs that sport a 3000:1 Cr so what they lack in Resolution, they make up for in Shadow detail if not pushed into making an image over 8' diagonal with only 800 x 600 res to work with.

But of course, EVERYONE pushes, don't they?:p

Bias aside, SD/MM LF & SM/MM LF both do Cr as well as or better (...how's that for 'polite' hedging?) than anything that has existed before, WHILE maintaining excellent "Whites" and avoiding losses of both detail through luminance and and color correctness. That's the horrible trade off most have to make, lose this 'good' just to create that 'good'. High Gain, High Contrast screens were created to enhance weak points, not make good points better. They all "Rob Peter to pay Paul".

Unacceptable.

And so is having to buy into a $5000.00 to 10,000.00+ PJ just to hopefully get a "perfect" picture. No, let's get down to reality and get happy with spending under $3000.00 for screen & PJ and let the other guys who spent way more seeking "the Best" turn a rainbow of different colors, mostly in the Red & Green hues. :D

You guys have all the fun. We never get threads like this one in the D-PJ forum. Clarence, what the heck have you started? My sides ache from all the belly laughing. (What was that part about the 'timid hermit', again?)

And yes, I still want one of those $40,000 CRT Barcos I read about.

Actually, the X1 is rated at a 2000:1 CR.

Yeah, it is marketed at 2000:1 CR. Of course, I do not know what its been measured at. And I am willing to bet that the light spill from it doesn't hurt the CR since it adds about 50 Million IRE to the entire spectrum, hehe.

He was called the Mississippi Man, but most just called him the Man,
because he was. As he stood in front of the open door of the dilapidated,
faded school bus the Man quietly shook his strong jawed, sun burnt head.
"There are so many" he thought as he glanced down at the clip board
he held in his hand. As each Krishna boarded the bus the Man carefully
checked off each from the list. With the last of them on board the Man
nodded to the driver and off the rickety old bus limped to its destination,
the airport.

I apologize beforehand.

Way off topic. Have you all noticed that there is now a forum member (with posts in this forum) who actually has the username "life sucks"?
I think I've now seen everything.

My mistake. I now see that our friend is Pablo. Not Pedro. Boy, that's a relief.

p.s. I apologize in advance for the insensitive stereotyping, Pablo. It was unintentional.

Gee, I wonder how our boy Pedro made out..

*Ducking, running and covering*

It sure is nice to see the screen overlords poke their head into CRT territory... I'm STILL trying to figure out these mixtures and techniques, and whether they would be benecial to a CRT image, rather than behr-ultra-white-painted drywall....

keep it up boys, this is great reading.

Is this really a good way to compare Projectors, using still-pictures?

.and the answer; Yes. Better than just talking about it. If we could make the images move a 24 fps, someone would probably say, "Can you really get the idea from such small moving images?"

One must just sally forth and proceed as one can.

I need to get my speakers behind the beer cooler.
Hmmm. Now that I think about it, maybe it would be a good idea to get the beer cooler out of the way of the screen too.

I linked them over here. "Screens" has been my 2nd place hangout for the last few weeks... You think comparing different projectors using screenshots is hard? Try comparing different paint mixes by using screenshots!

Yep, that's the same mission I'm on. I'm currently just using Sherwin Williams Bright White Matte ceiling paint just because that's what my neighbor had when I said, hey, I'm building a screen; you got any white paint?

Your question: Is this really a good way to compare Projectors
My response: Nope.

My question is:
"Is there a better way to compare projectors with screenshots from lowish resolutions on digital cameras?"

Never noticed it before, but they are the same guy. Funny I would recognize him from "I, Claudius" (which I saw about ten years ago), and not Gladiator, which I've only seen about 20 times. But, checked out the cast of both movies, and Derek Jacobi is in both.

I got a little chuckle when I first saw Derek Jacobi in Gladiator in a Toga again. I think Ridley Scott had a little fun casting the movie.

Here is the original picture from his CRT:

Mercer,

Excellent smooth image (smaller version below) Flesh tomes are slightly pinker and lack just a little shadow detail, but overall, a fabulous image.

You failed to mention your screen of choice? Inquiring minds want to know.
