Thinking about pulling the stock Bose unit from my 2008 Trailblazer and putting in a deck that would let me USB power an iPhone4.

The biggest problems as I see them:
-Stock unit is 2 levels, over and under, most aftermarkets are 1 level
-Stock unit is tied to the Bluetooth, Onstar and Steering column controls

I don't care about losing the Onstar, and could use the bluetooth in the new unit easy enough, but I'd like to keep the controls active for at least the radio, would be great if they could control at least pausing and skipping back and forth songs in a playlist on the iPhone too.

And i guess they make faceplates that center the single levels in between what were the two existing ones, right?

I'd actually prefer to have this done at a specialty audio shop but would want to know my options for those two problems before going in. I'm handy enough to be able to pull PCs apart and swap components around but I've never pulled a dash apart and put it back together so it might be beyond my skills to do this myself.

Any thoughts? Thanks for any advice!

Are you talking double DIN versus single DIN units? If so there are plenty of choices out there for both sizes. Or is the radio broken into two parts with A/C controls between them?

With an adapter you should be able to make your steering wheel controls work with an aftermarket deck.

However maybe you should just look into getting adapter that adds USB/AUX input to your factor deck, this way everything stays factory but you gain iPod input.

Lots of choices either way. I suggest some research over at http://www.crutchfield.com/c_3/Car-Audio-Video.html to figure out your options. A quick check shows your OnStar system can still work with yet another adapter.

Yes, Double DIN, I guess that's the name for it thanks. On the unit it has a CD/aux switch, does hitting that twice go from the CD (which I never use) to a second input that can be connected separately?

I'd be fine with keeping the existing unit if I could simply add a connection to power and send audio from my iPhone.

Yeah that looks like it should work. Just make sure your radio supports it, sometimes you need a radio that has the factory CD changer or Satellite radio hookup available. I don't have any experience going this route, I just know its an option. I normally ditch the factory radio and go full aftermarket (with crossovers, amps, subs, etc). Thus I would just put in a double DIN unit with iPod & Bluetooth, get the OnStar interface and call it a day. However this might be a more expensive route.

If your radio has an AUX input (check your owners manual) that is even easier as you just need a headphone cable to route the iPod's audio into the radio. I didn't see an AUX input in those photos, just the button so my question is where is the AUX port itself? Or maybe you need an adapter for that.

As I said, this is not my area of expertise... that's why I recommend Crutchfield, those guys are great, give them a call, tell 'em what you want to do and they'll give you recommendations. Their stuff might cost a bit more but their support and knowledge is A+ especially with factory integration since cars these days have so many options.

I agree. Use crutchfield at the least as a resource. The adapter that your vehicle requires is not cheap. It allows the whole onstar functionality to remain. There are also steering wheel control modules from Pac that are available.
