I have an older Alpine pdx-5 (5ch, 600w RMS @ 4ohms) w/ build date of 2008, and my buddy just bought a used pdx-5 w/ a build date of 2010. Can we assume these are going to be very similar, or has build quality/components decreased over time for the same models?

Is there any way (without a complicated setup) to "test" each amp to see which performs better?

you can assume since its alpine and they're both cea2006 certified amplifers, that they produce at least their rated power.

You can run them to same speakers, if you know the response curve and the impedence at what frequency, you can measure the voltage and get a fairly accurate reading on the outputs.

also an o-scope is the best way.
