We have to go through the same process as building a home sub. What are your goals? Sound quality? SPL? A combination? How large can you build the enclosure? What vehicle is this going in? Does your budget include the enclosure?

We will probably recommend a sub from one of the same manufacturers that we use in the DIY sub section but there are many options based on your answers.

Whatever you do, please don't buy stuff at Best Buy or Circuit City or any of those big chain stores. The brands sold in these stores are all crap.. bar none, and they sell for many times their actual worth.

The installer who has done most of my recent installs (while he worked at Good Guys and recently installing headrest monitors and a DVD player in my 07 Yukon) swears that Hifonics are good, and much better than anything you can buy at a chain store like BB or CC.

I was thinking something for my room until I get a car so the enlcosure can be as big as it needs to be and the 600$ is for the amp and sub only. I was looking at the Pioneer TS-W3004SPL 12 SPL sub atm.

Me too. They are low on flash and high on substance/performance.

JL amps and subs are some of the best. you will pretty much drain your $600 budget on an amp though, and could do the same with one of their subs........totally depends on what you're looking for.

The Pioneer mentioned earlier doesn't have bad T/S parameters for either car or home. The lowest price I could find was $150. I'd add a few more $$$ and get SSD 12 from Fi Car Audio. Fi is a new company started by Scott Atwell. He ran the buildhouse Destijl Engineering that supplied SVS, Adire Audio, Resonant Engineering and a lot of other well known companies.

Other subs to look at:
Ascendant Audio Arsenal 12
TC Sounds TC 1000
Elemental Designs 13 Ov.2 (If you decide on this one, I'll tell you how to get a 30% discount.

Hifonics' Brutus line of amps is a pretty good value for money.

JL subs are mainly for SPL, and not as good for SQ. If you are interested in SQ, I would suggest you look at Image Dynamics and Arc Audio. These are brands you won't find in run-of-the-mill car audio shops, and they are serious competition grade SQL subs.

I have never heard that in my life. JL were the ones winning SQ back in the day never saw a JL SPL car at DB drag either. The guys at eD did a shootout and the W7 won (they did not test any of there own to be fair to the rest) in SPL and SQ

I too am looking for a good sub/amp and an amp for the fronts

Rainbow SLC 265s for components
Front amp: Arc Audio KAR 400.4 or a Zapco

Sub amp: raaj, I know the Hifonics amps tend to overrate their power ratings. I do like the DA TDX12" but not the price hehe....

i listen to a lot of jazz and movies for my kids/wife mainly....

Knu.. if you really represent Knukonceptz, great to have you here !! :)

As to my previous comments about JL subs, I've only heard the W7s in some competition cars at SBN, and all of them sounded to be high on SPL than SQ. From what I've read and heard over the past 1-2 years, JL subs seem to be more popular with the SPL guys. Hence, my opinion, FWIW. Most of my exposure to SQ cars seemed to use Image Dynamics, Arc Audio, DLS etc.

ID and ARC are both very good companies, I would put JL in the same category. 90% of show cars are DB Drag / SPL. Most are Large ported boxes with high tuning to get that extra DB at one note. Like any woofer, the box is the key factor. It is amazing what a single 12" sub can do these days.....

and yes, I am part owner of KnuKonceptz ;)

Ah yes, I have a single Image Dynamics 12v3D4 in free-air and it's amazing SQ.

If you can find one floating around out there, autotek amps were an awesome value for the money ... putting out the wattage they said they did.

Sorry OT

holy cow knukonceptz.com! I purchased an amp kit from you guys about 5 yrs ago. I would have never imagined you would still be around, although it makes sense since I had a great experience buying from you! I will definitely be back buying a new amp kit for my brothers install.
