Hey there,

Summer is just around the corner and I want to buy a new camcorder. I've been looking at different models and I think It comes down to these two:

Panasonic V500
Sony HDR CX250

There both around the same price, but which one should i get ?

Thanks a lot guys

I bought the HDR-XR260V and took it back and the main reason was the optics . Anything bright outside or inside had a Purple Halo on the edges and that is called CA (Chromatic Aberration) . It's in the optical glass and don't listen if someone tells you it's in the aperture settings cause it is not . If you consider either of these two test it first on anything very bright inside the store usually a fluorescent light works good and zoom in from a distance . I bought the Canon HF M50 . If you can accept the CA in any lens then either one is probably a good buy but i myself cannot accept CA like the Sony produces .

Never noticed any CA with my Panny TM90. The V700 is the one I would go with because it has a wide angle lens built in. I love my TM90!

I second ronlhodges' comments. Avoid any of the Sony's new 250 or 260-series cams. The CA as he's already explained is really bad, especially in the tele range. They may be advertised as having 20-30x zooming capability but how good is a great zoom range with such poor image quality. Sony must be thinking people who buy camcorders in this price range see the extra magenta, cyan, halo effects etc. as something normal.

I'm not sure about the Panasonic, though. Try before you buy.

I looked up several test on this camera and i did not find any with CA present but none were actually tested for CA but it would be obvious in most videos with bright objects . I did a test today with my Canon HF M50 and you can see it here on Youtube :
