I have a JVC GZ-HD7U. It's a decent camcorder that has some flaws. I like having a manual focus ring and quick adjustment for aperture settings and shutter speed.

How much improvement could I expect to get from a DSLR camera? And how money would I have to spend to best the GZ-HD7U?

Don't know if I should upgrade now or wait a while. How well does the JVC-HD7U hold up against newer camcorders?

The newer camcorders will be a little sharper but since we don't have global shutter MOS/CMOS chips yet on consumer, they come with a rolling shutter effect. A lot of people wont notice until your shooting video at a place that has people taking tons of pictures with the flash. At least the chips of today are getting better. A decent update to the HD7 would be something like a Canon G10 or Panasonic X900 when it comes to good picture quality and decent Manuel controls.

Thanks for info. I'll be sure to look up the G10 and Panasonic x7900.

It's kind of shame that the jvc- GZ-HD7U writes in a non-standard video file (TOD files), low light picture quality isn't great, and has poor optical image stabilization, etc.

Do the dslr cameras compare with camcorders like the Panasonic X900? I'm considering getting one to take as photographs as well.

Do you think there would be anything revolutionary in camera tech in the next couple years?
