This probably isn't the correct forum, but can't seem to find anything else closer...

I am looking to get a SLR camera in the $1500 price range. Any thoughts between the Nikon D7100 and Canon EOS something???

Or point me in the right direction

The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout "Save us!"... and I'll whisper "no."

Are you primarily a video shooter or primarily a photographer?

The Nikon 5200 is a great pound for pound king and great in low light. Said to have better video than the full frame Nikon D800 & it has 4:2:2 HDMI output. http://www.eoshd.com/content/9653/nikon-d5200-review. Doesn't suffer from the same moire or aliasing either.

Then we have the Panasonic GH3, which is very good, but less gradable video, a bit less dynamic range and much smaller sensor (ie; even more crop factor on lenses), but it has 1080p/60p if you need that. It's also quite a bit more expensive.

Hi vipervick - my recommendations will be different, depending on whether you are most interested in stills or video. Here are the cameras I recommend - with some of the reasons.

For video below $1500 new:

1. $1298 Panasonic GH3 - high bit rates, multiple codecs (MP4 doesn't count) 1080/60p, headphone jack, minimal moire, splash & dust proof, articulated LCD, fast & quiet autofocus, built-in wi-fi, unlimited video recording clip length outside of Europe

2. $1197 Nikon D7100 - headphone jack, moire free, weather sealed, wi-fi upgradeable

3. $750 Panasonic G6 (w kit lens - available in June) - 1080/60p, moire free, articulated LCD, fast & quiet autofocus, focus peaking, built-in wi-fi, unlimited video recording clip length outside of Europe

4. $697 Nikon D5200 - moire free, articulated LCD, wi-fi upgradeable

For stills below $1500 new:

1. $1197 Nikon D7100 - weather sealed, 6fps, 39 point autofocus, wi-fi upgradeable, moire-free video with headphone jack

2. $1299 Canon 7D - weather resistant, 8fps, 19 point autofocus

3. $798 Pentax K-5 II - fully weather sealed body and lenses, 7fps, 11 point autofocus

Hope this is helpful,

Bill
