I have a Canon ZR900 - cheap one. Suddenly it won't play the tapes. The time left moves but nothing shows. I tried a few tapes after the one I was capturing wouldn't work and none of them work. I don't have a tape cleaner for it but it really doesn't get used too much - maybe start with that?

You can buy a tape cleaner.
If that doesn't work, it's not worth paying for repair when even the cheapest, present-day HD point and shoot will surpass it.

If it no longer works, but need to transfer tapes to your PC to make them into files, you could buy a used ZR900:

Either way, consider moving on to SD card based high definition video.

I have an SD card cam, but there are a few tapes I want to transfer from the old DV. And the DV does a better job of recording in a concert since the SD one requires opening the view screen in order to operate, which makes it tough to be stealthy. The DV also has a better (and stereo) mike. What I really need is a better SD cam but I still have those DV tapes ...

I threw in a bid on a used DV cam. I read the comments on the head cleaners and folks talk about lines and blurred sound, but no one mentions nothing at all coming out. So I think maybe a head cleaner would be a good idea if I was going to keep using the cam but I'll just transfer the tapes and find a better SD solution for the future.
