I bought my Canon HF20 in 2009 for about $600 and have invested another couple of hundred dollars on a wide-angle lens and an extra battery...

It's a pretty good camcorder... I am used to the setup and love the FOV with the wide angle lens...

Well, unfortunately it started to act up on me, and now is completely inoperable... Canon can repair it for $285 (+ applicable tax)...

I am trying to figure out if it's worth repairing for $285, or if I can actually get a better camera without spending much more than what it would cost for the repairs... With technology moving as fast as it does, I am really wondering if a sub-300 dollar camera would out-perform my tried and true Canon...

I would appreciate any feedback/opinions...

Thanks!

I would repair, because:

* you will still have a good camera with good feature set and image quality
* throwing thing away and getting a new one instead of repairing the broken one is bad

It's a tough call. You could repair it or even get something like a used HF M300/30/31 on ebay..
which are basically updated versions of the HF200/20/21 but with a touchscreen. Same 37mm filter thread for your wide angle lens and takes same batteries.

Or maybe sell your camcorder accessories and get something like the mirrorless EOS M:
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Compact-Systems-3-0-Inch-EF-M18-55mm/dp/B00A2BVCO0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1378169558&sr=8-1&keywords=EOS+M%3A

EDIT: Here's a used HF M300 with a 3-year warranty:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/CANON-VIXIA-HF-M300-DIGITAL-CAMCORDER-HD-FLASH-MEMORY-3-YEAR-WARRANTY-USED-/300951815768?pt=Camcorders_Professional_Video_Cameras&hash=item4612204658

Comes with only the battery and power adapter, but you can use your accessories from the HF20 with it.

HF M300 shoots to cards only/no built-in memory. You can still transfer via USB, but card reader is easier.

With the HF M300 it has the better, dynamic image stabilization with powered IS/HF20 stabilization is inferior. The touchscreen also permits you to focus or set exposure by touching on the subject/LCD screen.

$20 shipping but till less than the repair. With the repair you would still have to pay shipping both ways.

Anyone who is intimately familiar with the Canon HF20/HF200... Is it better to buy a $300 camera new with today's new technology, or should I put the $300 into repairing a device that has four year old technology?
