Sony has lowered the price of its Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 premium superzoom. The MSRP in the US is now $998, down from $1299, and prices in Europe have dropped as well (though it's unclear if they're official). It's not known if this was a planned price reduction, or a reaction to the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1000 which is about to hit store shelves at a list price of $899.

RX10 got firmware upgrade - Add XAVC S recording format

I cannot believe this, but Sony release firmware upgrade for RX10.

Name: Firmware update Ver.2.00 for DSC-RX10 (Windows)
Release date: 28/08/2014
Benefits and improvements
  • Enables shooting 60p/30p/24p/120p movies in the XAVC S format that supports high bit rates
    (1920×1080) 50p/25,(1280×720) 100p, (1920×1080) 60p/30p/24p,(1280×720) 120p
Note: When shooting a movie in the XAVC S format, ensure that an SDXC card of Class 10 or faster is used.
What's next? 4K?

I knew this will happen, although I expected RX10 Mk2. Cudos to Sony for the upgrade! Now how about slow zoom and so-so OIS?

Those things are more likely to depend on mechanical stuff, so I wouldn't hold my breath on them.

Adding XAVC-S is probably much simpler since the code would already have been developed for other cameras which share the basic hardware, such as the RX100M3.
