My mind is already set for GH4 but it would be good to know what Sony is going for when it release.

Ken, the A7s will cost $3,450 ! And to think I almost cancelled my GH4 pre-order after seeing the A7s rumored 4K specs .

The world’s first store accepting preorders and unveiling the price of the new Sony A7s is WexUK (Click here). But asked via Twitter they also said that the price “is given to us by Sony, but it may change between now and the release date“. For comparison: WexUk sells the A7r for 1669 pounds! The A7s costs exactly $50 more! Based on the current A7r Amazon pricing the A7s could cost around $3,450! That would be higher than expected. I hope Sony will read your comments so that they will lower the price smile.gif

Joe, that's nuts. In many respects it offers less than the GH4, yet it's twice the price?! I guess Sony doesn't want to sell too many of these.

Yup, you're lucky you didn't cancel your GH4 preorder.

The U.S. market is typically cheaper for the same camera.

For example, the GH4 is selling for $1,698 at Amazon U.S.:
http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-DMC-GH4KBODY-16-05MP-Mirrorless-Cinematic/dp/B00I9GYG8O/ref=sr_1_1/189-1316207-8790735?ie=UTF8&qid=1397152202&sr=8-1&keywords=GH4

and Amazon UK for £1,306, which is $2,192 (about a $500 difference):
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-DMC-GH3HEB-K-Compact-System-14-140mm/dp/B009T3DEQ6/ref=sr_1_1/275-7477942-6467655?ie=UTF8&qid=1397152222&sr=8-1&keywords=GH4

Since I now have the 128GB UHS-1 U3 card I am ready to shoot 4K with the GH4 Ken.smile.gif

Even so, still no bargain for the A7s. I might feel differently if it recorded 4K internally, but it doesn't. The GH4 is obviously a far better buy IMO, unless you have a real need to shoot in the dark. wink.gif

I hear you, the GH4 is a solid camera without need for the external.

I'm just saying that UK prices are not directly related to U.S.
A better example might be...

Sony AX100X £1,939.00 ($3,254):

Sony FDR-AX100 $1998:

It looks like Sony is going all out with the full frame E mount system now and not so much with the legacy Minolta A mount (A77,A99 etc).

A7s low light video shot at up to 409,600 iso !

wonder if that powered zoom is truly a cinema lens with no or minimal breathing issues.

I would think so since it has focus and aperture control rings feature industry standard gearing.
Chevypower's Avatar Chevypower 12:23 PM 04-11-2014
That's sweet, Sony would be wise to focus on E-mount lenses (no pun intended). I guess they didn't really need the Minolta acquisition in the first place.

I believe 42nd is a typical bait and switch store.

Don't confuse 42nd St Photo with 47th St Photo. Different stores, different policies and different reputations.

http://www.42photo.com/default.htm

http://47stphotoonline.com/

My personal favorite New York supplier is B&H whose definition of honesty, service and support is over the top. Sometimes I'll use Amazon for faster shipping and the tie in supplier might be Adorama.

It would be nicer to buy local, unfortunately internet shopping has become a more convenient and more competitive experience to fighting traffic, parking and paying Sales Tax.

Ok thanks, I was thinking there were two with similar names, I'm sure it was deliberate by the bait and switch store. B&H is good, but I agree that buying from a local business is the way to go. It's hard to complain about local jobs disappearing when we buy all our stuff online. Plus a local store here is owned by a professional wildlife photographer who offers a free class for buying a camera from him. I'm sure many other small businesses offer some incentive to buy from them because they know about the unfair sales tax system that puts online businesses at an advantage.

Shooting by moonlight should be possible with the A7s and 50mm F0.95 !

I just got this picture and the full specs of the soon to be announced Mitakon 50mm f/0.95 Full Frame E-mount lens! Like I already told you before the lens will be unveiled on April 20th and costs $799 only. It's Mitakon second E-mount lens after the [shoplink 14656 ebay]35mm f/0.95 lens for ASP-C E-mount cameras (they are on auction here on eBay)[/shoplink] which unlike the new 50mm lens doesn't cover the FF sensor area. Image samples of the soon to come 50mm lens can be seen on that SAR post (Click here).

The lens will ship in May and these are the specs:
Lens mount: Sony FE
Focal length: 50mm
Optics: 10 Elements (7 groups)
Image cover: 35mm full frame
Max. Aperture: f/0.95
Min. Aperture: f/16
Filter size: 58mm
Lens size: 87mm (L) x 68.5mm (diameter)
Weight: 720g.

The reasoning for lack of internal 4K recordings is mentioned at the 4:20 mark. Now that's according to Sony.

brunerww's Avatar brunerww 06:07 AM 04-20-2014
Thanks, Paulo. The big news for me is at 3:17 - "no limited record times. most interchangeable lens cameras on the market today are limited to 29 minutes, 59 seconds..." Hallelujah - Sony finally removes this stupid limit from one of its interchangeable lens cameras! I hope this is a sign of the future for lower priced E-mount cameras.

I would have ditched my GH4 pre-order and bought this camera if it had internal 4K recording.

Congratulations on finding someone from Sony USA at the A7 display. All I could find were very nice people from Sony Japan with limited English-language skills frown.gif

Cheers,

Bill

The Sony rep also mentions that the unlimited recording time is possible because the A7s has a larger heat sink than the A7 and A7r. (Which is why the A7s is also heavier.)
Paulo Teixeira's Avatar Paulo Teixeira 06:50 AM 04-20-2014
Here"s Vitaliy's response to my video. He's the person who hacked the GH1 and GH2 so he a bit knowledgeable about this stuff.
"Sole reason for lack of 4K recording is lack of suitable LSI that can compress and store it."
brunerww's Avatar brunerww 04:43 PM 04-20-2014
Maybe they can buy an LSI from Panasonic - or buy a GH4 and reverse engineer it wink.gif

I talked to Will Thompson at Atomos, and he said Sony called him at the last minute and asked him if he was working on a 4K recorder. He said "yes, but we're planning to announce it in the Fall"

Sony asked him to push it up to NAB for a joint announcement with the A7s.

My guess is that the A7s rollout was a crisis response to Panasonic's GH4 announcement in February - and that they rushed the camera to market before the engineering was completely done.

Looks like 42nd St Photo had the correct price in the US before any other dealer.
