Panasonic GH4 and FZ-1000 Samples

Sorry if another like this has been created.

Here I have a GH4 with 12-35mm lens sample.

The jolting vibration of the Hong Kong Tram was mostly absorbed by my hand with the rest the OIS. Still, very large horizontal agitations could not be mitigated.

How do you like working with the FZ1000 for your theatrical shoots compared to the AX100?

The FZ1000 provides exposure compensation of +/1 3 EV for 4K video. The AX100 does not. In fact, GH4 does not either.
EV control is crucial for spotlights and stage lights. Without it, most faces will be overexposed.
The color and resolution between the two is not that much.

AX100 is wider at 29mm (35mm eqv) while the FZ1000 is 37mm. The AX100 is suited for coverage for the stage and unattended on a tripod as there is no 29 minute limit.

Regarding zooming. AX100 is ok. Neither of its speeds are that smooth. FZ1000's zooming capability is pretty poor.

IS is better on the Panasonic over Sony.

Billy, I actually never saw any overexposure issues with your stage shots from the AX100. They always looked excellent.

I can't say I've found the zooming on the AX100 to be anything but smooth. I would like more variability of the zoom, but what's there is smooth.

Your FZ1000 shots here are quite nice.

hey Ken!

agreed with the AX100. It continues to be a workhorse. It does offer the built in ND filters. Of course, it is not a replacement for EV control. But in a totally dark scene with ridiculous strong lighting. ND1 can work. Other than that, I had to post process.

While FZ1000 offers EV control in 4K, GH4 does not. puzzling.
cheers

That is simply untrue. I use ev control all the time with the GH4, shooting 4K (shutter priority mode). Just press the ev button and the back dial controls the ev adjustment. No puzzle.

i just checked again. If the top dial is at "S" for shutter priority mode. I cannot shoot at 4K resolution for movies. Only 1080p

If I use to MovieM mode[ ]. (P22 in GH4 manual)
I can set both shutter and aperture, but cannot change EV settings doing 4K movies capture.

What am I doing wrong?

You do NOT shoot movies unless you set the top dial to MovieM mode if you want control in video. With that set (Movie mode), you now fix the shutter (shutter priority). This means aperture and ISO are auto. Can you do that? Once you are sure you are in fixed shutter, in movie mode, and auto aperture press the ev button on top. You should be able to change the ev with the back dial. There is no logical reason why the video resolution has anything to do with ev setting (but logic is irrelevant, I do that all the time). I am not talking about the special 24fps wider 4K, just regular UHD, of course.

ok. i know what the issue is. I have been shooting in MovieM mode and Manual. Setting both shutter and aperture. Under Manual, exposure compensation is not available. Under Shutter priority, it is as you say. All this in 4K UHD.

GH4 and FZ1000 using CineV
AX100 using Cinematone

FZ1000 does not match well with GH4, the noise is higher.
AX100 is near impossible to match with the two Panasonic.

Is that due to noise or colors? Which one would you pick for maximum image quality in low light?

varying issues.
the AX100 is cleaner in low light.

i am trying again this week at the same venue using CineD instead of CineV.
Maybe the color will be closer to the Sony.

Trying to setup at my lab before a gig never really works.

AX100 with FZ1000 and GH4 using CineV

Start this week using all 4K cameras in CineV and max db settings. White balance in 3000K
Set all Sony AX100 in spotlight mode and 3000K
This is as close in color profile between the brands.
Grain wise. the FZ1000 keeps up with the GH4 under ISO800, best under ISO400.
This is hard to do in the theater.

This teaser was in CineV, max db, ISO800 and 3000K
AX100 using spotlight, max gain6db and 3000K
