I too can confirm, doesn't play, just the 60p ones. This is a problem. XAVC 10 bit 4:2:2 is fine so why not the Panny files?

Dont panic guys, this happens so often its not even funny. Its just like when any new camera is released and its raw stills doesn't work with any editor. Its SOP for a new format.

The reason editors haven't got h265 yet is because almost no one bought the NX1 (I bought three anyway).

In this case it's not HEVC in the test files, but h.264 10 bit 4:2:2. The 8 bit 4:2:0 files are fine. Mark is exactly right.

Yes, the video is 60p, so it is not the problem one. All my editors and players can handle the 4K 60p 8bit clips. The problem is with the 24p and 30p 10bit 4:2:2 files only.

I have only one friend that works at Adobe. A significant chunk of his time is working on codec licensing. From what he says, it is a PITA and the playground is full of lawyers.

Cut and past from the Wikipedia topic of "High Efficiency Video Coding": "HEVC [H.265] is restricted by patents owned by various parties. Use of HEVC technologies requires the payment of royalties to licensors of HEVC patents, such as MPEG LA, HEVC Advance, and Technicolor SA. The licensing fees are many times higher than the fees for AVC [h.264]. The problematic licensing situation is one of the main reasons HEVC adoption has been very low on the web and is why some of the largest tech companies (Amazon, AMD, ARM, Cisco, Google, Intel, Microsoft, Mozilla, Netflix, NVIDIA and more) have joined the Alliance for Open Media, which aims to deploy the royalty-free alternative format AV1 in 2017."

Add to your comments that HEVC is a *highly* compressed format, with up to 250 GOP, 250 frames in a group that are built only from changes to the preceding frames. That's how compression works, by not encoding the full frame but just the frame to frame changes, a lot less data is used, extending recording time but not quality. All-I recording is also a form of compressed recording but records each frame fully and so uses lots more memory for the same recording time, wasteful in a static scene but better when there is motion.

To conclude, lower compression schemes like high bit-rate All-I h.264 are better for capturing quality than highly compressed codecs like HEVC which record only the difference between frames for a very long stream of frames.

The less compression, the better the quality.

At 2lbs, this must be the heaviest 4/3rds camera by far. It's reaching into the DSLR weight class. Aside from the IBIS, I'm sure heat dissipation was one of the factors in the weight increase.

That's why it is a pocket camera, because you have deep pockets!

Not being able to play the output seems to me a big plus - there will be no grounds for moaning about some aspect of the dynamic range, flesh tones, edge noise etc etc. therefore a much happier user.
Seriously though, those 10bit files read ok into After Effects and the free Virtualdub, but not into Avidemux.

From the limited amounts of real footage I have seen, this new camera looks like it is going to be an impressive competitor, at least for video. It looks very nice, especially on a 4K TV when you can appreciate it's full glory. Certainly a step up from the GH4 for sure.

No doubt Sony are going to up the ante with the mark III versions of their a7 cameras in 2017 as well. It is too bad Samsung left the market, otherwise they would probably have a kick ass new camera this year as well.

And Canon still continue to give us crud, lol.

One thing i dont think has been mentioned is if the crop is the same as the GH4s.

It does a full sensor read, so it does not crop like the GH4 apparently.

I just got the Panasonic G85 and if this is any indication of where the GH5 is going, it will most assuredly be a winner. I'm very impressed with the footage out of the G85, and the IBIS coupled with the kit lens OIS, makes for some very impressive stabilization.

I like the way it rolls off highlights better than my Sony. Shooting a couple of snow scenes, the G85 was more impressive in how it handled the bright whites of the snow, clipping in a less obtrusive manner. Of course the kit lens, although very nice optically, is no low light champion.

Nice shot!

Maybe you'll have time to shop for a drone than can carry the GH5!

The Yuneec TORNADO H920 Multi-Rotor would work great with the GH5 up in the air or on the ground.

Use the force Luke!

Pictured is Luke Neumann holding GH5 on gimbal. I guess we don't know if it's actually the GH5 on that gimbal, but I think it's fair to ask whether the video he produced relied on more than just Panasonic supplied IBIS to create the beautiful video images. He stated that IBIS likely the most exciting feature that customers want.

It is a good list of reasons to buy! I'm looking forward to seeing some of your footage taken with it. I know you have a good lens collection, but have you picked a favorite "all around" lens to match your new camera when it comes?

Joe,
.
I can see why. My initial exposure to photography was Nikon 35mm. Favorites were an f/1.4 50mm and a f/2.5 105mm. Crop factor calculations put that about in the middle. It would indeed be a wonderful lens. Do you know if it has or needs a firmware update for the GH5 version of "Dual IS"?

Now, with my Panasonic, I'm using a 14-140 a lot when I'm not trying to pretend to be a wildlife videographer with a 100-400.

Bill
