Has This Forum Died Along With The Camcorder Market?

It has been quiet here lately. Cemeteries make more noise. Except for Joe starting a few topics, there is little to read or write about.

I don't post videos much, but a few days ago I thought it might be worth a try to incite some activity. I put together an example of shooting 4K in the typical bad light school gym. I used a hybrid camera. There was not comment, no likes, no criticism, no nothing.

Is it time to tell the AVS folks to shut it down?

Bill

Premature.

If you want your fellow filmmakers to pat you on the back, then may I suggest DVInfo forum, they are oh so polite and courteous there, with their real names and stuff.

This is not a jab at you. When reading the above, picture a sardonic grin. Actually, always presume a sardonic expression on my face when reading my replies.

I did not watch your video because I am not interested in the subject, and I am tired of the camera arms race. I wish people were shooting stuff for the sake of shooting and having fun, not for the sake of showcasing their latest toy. Mark offers interesting stuff from time to time, when he is not shooting in his suburban neighborhood.

I had to look up "sardonic". I have always assumed such an expression!

I wasn't actually looking for a pat on the back. I was doing the video anyway for another reason. I posted it here because I thought there might be some interest in a camera/lens combo that was supposed to be less than stable in 4K, had exposure "stepping" issues and focus "jidder". In other words, there was a technical part of the "camcorder" aspect of the camera that was better than expected.

I agree with the part about "shooting for the sake of shooting and having fun". "Showcasing" has become dull because so many affordable (relatively cheap) cameras, software and TVs make home video look fantastic. Yet somehow sharing the "fun shooting" on YouTube or Vimeo gets lost in the storm.

Do you have a place where the gear is not the emphasis and you enjoy sharing your videos other than here?

Sadly boring stills are far more popular than video, when ever i am out filming wildlife there will be 20 snapping away often with lenses that cost as much as small cars.

I might be the one shooting 4K video with a 1000mm equivalent field of view with gear in the electric bicycle price range.

The only thing I have been doing is shooting a few stills here and there with my Samsung Edge Plus smartphone on my bike rides like this one yesterday. Wait till spring when the GH5 comes out.

I used to frequent the hv20 forum, I believe it has closed. I was booted from DVXForum and DVInfo. This is the only place where I post anything related to video. Sometimes I also post snarky replies to YouTube videos. I do follow other places where I read or watch stuff, but I do not post there. OTOH, I don't have much to brag about, equipment or content-wise. Mocking comments is all what is left.

There has been a dirt of really new interesting video gear coming out lately. I mean not in terms of new models coming out but something new that makes a difference in the content you can already achieve with the existing gear. Sony may have done their best to spice up the hybrid market but their newer cameras have been too incremental and often cost significantly more. Their consumer camcorder lineup looks like it's dying too. Panasonic, Olympus, Canon and Fujifilm all have been less active in the video market and all of them seem to have at best carved up the remaining niches in video and stills here and there.

Really if you look around there is nothing that could make what you normally shoot any better. Getting out and shooting more is IMHO can do wonder more than newer cameras nowadays.

We got about 4 inches yesterday. Most that stuck for a couple years.

Maybe we should move away from buying and testing cameras themselves and more towards accessories for them. If you were thinking of getting a Sony FS5 pro camcorder for $5000, instead, why not go for the RED DSMC2 viewfinder with a massive 1080p resolution for several hundred dollars less. Imagine the envy on people's faces as you walk through the streets with a RED EPIC-W viewfinder attached to your eye!

If anyone here buys a RED product you will have to do it anyway. All their products - even codecs- are in caps, and this is so because ALL THEIR USERS ONLY SPEAK IN CAPITALS.

Bill, it's a digital picture frame. If you want to show your videos just show them on your large screen 4K TV.
