I am in the market for a HD camcorder. I am trying to do as much research as possible. Can anyone point me towards a buying guide/primer/comparison chart?

There seems to be a big difference in price between camera's that seem similar to me. I realize they are not, but I need to know what I am looking for.

Am I to assume that the $500-ish HD cameras are similar to a point and shoot camera (smaller sensor, more noise at low light)? Good in ideal conditions, but as soon as you lose light your picture goes bad. The more expensive cameras are more DSLR type (much better low light performance, more options, etc)?

I hope I am making some sense.

Thanks in advance for any help.
