Long story short, I've ended up with a US-version NTSC Canon HV10 instead of a PAL one (sigh). I do plan on using it for some SD content.

I assume the difference is purely the firmware. Is there a way to convert the camera?

I believe that the difference is a lot more than just firmware. There is absolutely no way that you will be able to convert it from NTSC to PAL standards.
