Is it recommended that a head cleaning tape be used on a brand new never used camcorder before any filming ? I have heard they can be abrasive and should only be used periodically or when noise/arifacts begin to show up regularly. I have also heard that using one on a new camcorder prior to an other usage would help clean any misc. mfg residue or what have you.

I wouldnt obsess over cleaning, it can do more harm than good. Often you can visually inspect the head with a flashlight. Clean it once in a while, which for me is about once a year.

Also, 100% or 70% rubbing alcohol is a very safe general electronics cleaning fluid, with 100% solutions better than 70%.

The thing to remember with any electronics cleaning is you want to leave zero residue behind, you dont want to use water solutions, and you want to minimize the use of abrasives. Alcohol is relatively safe because it cleans by drying the moisture out of dirt, which then wipes off or falls off.

A mini dv cassette cleaner is only about $10 and you get about 25 cleanings. I agree with John about cleaning only once and a while.
