I have another job which requires the cable boxes to be controlled by RS232, anyone have any suggestions? I have used directTV samsung boxes in the past but just wondering if there are anymore out there? I called Time Warner Cable and he told me of a cicso box that had it but of course when I searched on the model he gave me there was no RS232 to be found.....eh what dose he know, he's just a stinking sales person, they'll tell you anything you want to hear!!

Cable boxes are an annoyingly common problem. Your best bet is to use IP control of a TiVo, if that's an option. Otherwise you're pretty much limited to IR.

DirecTV boxes can be controlled via RS232 using a Serial to USB adapter. I control all of my Sat boxes this way using a MSC-400 from URC. Works so much better than IR. I don't know if any cable boxes can also be controlled this way. Some are coming out with IP control so that may be the direction you will need to go. What gear are you using to do the control system?

We are using AMX NI-4100. In fact now that I think about it, we used the same Serial to USB adapters as well, different model though. We used an IOGEAR
