Hi All, I'm a certified Crestron/AMX programmer with about 4 years of experience, I've worked for a residential company and now work in commericial.

In additional to my full time commerical work I'd like to do freelance residential. In the past I've done a few jobs through networking or clients who no longer wanted to use a company. I will call those previous clients, as well as a few installers I'v worked with, but aside from that, I'm at a loss how to market myself.

So my question to you - if you were looking for a programmer, for your new or an upgraded system, how would you go about finding someone? What would you look for and how would you decide?

Thank you!

Have you considered creating a web site showcasing your experience and credentials? If you do, be sure you focus heavily on Search Engine Optimization so you show up well in the organic.

Google is a crowded field, but there are ways to get noticed and if you design your own site, it's close to free.

Crestron's website includes a list of CAIPs which is worth looking at if you want a local programmer that is making a go of things.
Crestron Approved Indepenent Programmers have been through the advanced classes and taken some testing stuff to show how proficient they are.

Still, you want to check out any programmer you may be working with and spending a fair bit of cash on.

I've been doing Crestron programming for over a dozen years now and do similar in my area. I don't focus on just Crestron exclusively as I do complete systems, but almost everyone ends up with some type of Crestron controller in their home theater setups. I've certainly received a few phone calls about Crestron specifically and have always been more than willing to help, but the focus has to be on long term support and building a relationship if at all possible.

FYI, Crestron CAIPs are now referred to as Crestron Service Providers (CSPs). They made this change around the first of the year.
