Hi ALL,

I have an HTPC in my set up and I use an X10 appliance module to turn it on and off. I also have an IR 543 that can accept an IR command and translate it to an X10 command. This way I can have my Harmony One remote issue an IR command to turn on or off the HTPC. But my IR543 just crapped out and I now find that they are discontinued. Is there any other device out there that can accept an IR command and then send out an X10 command.

An alternative would be a wireless switch but the only ones I found use RF instead of IR.

Any suggestions would be welcomed!

Thanks,
Gerry

The IR543 is the best X10 product ever produced IMHO... I can't believe they stopped making it. Smarthome has an IRLinc that is supposed to work with X10 and Insteon. I have not tried it so I cannot comment on how well it works or how many house codes/channels it supports.

I saw that one and its available at Amazon slightly cheaper. The only problem with it is that while it can control X10 modules you have to put it into that mode and to do so you need an X10 controller to send a command with the correct codes that this device will intercept that code and then set itself into X10 mode. The IR543 in addition to accepting IR commands was an X10 controller and since its broken (even the buttons will not turn the module on or off) I would have to get another X10 controller. I found one for about $20 but still it adds to the cost. There's another IR controller I found that's about $60 but I think it also need an X10 controller.

I agree that the IR543 was a very useful device and was very disappointed to find out that it had been discontinued!

Any other suggestions?

True people are paying over $100 for them but there have been a few that ended at reasonable prices in the last month. So if you have the patience...

Patience? What's that??!!

Frankly its not that big of a deal as I don't use the HTPC all that much. Lately there's been a lot of shows on Sun that I want and its too many for my Verizon FiOS DVR, so I fire up the HTPC that has a HD OTA tuner in it and I can record one show at a time. Without the IR543 what I do now is to just plug the PC's AC cord in when I need it and unplug it when I'm done. VERY low tech but of course works.

I still want to be able to do that under control of my Harmony One IR remote so I'm still looking for an alternate to the IR543. So I'm open to any other suggestions!

I'm in the same boat, except I'm looking for an IR543 for the first time. It's soooo frustratring! There was one on ebay a few days ago for $70, but I thought it was a ripoff. After searching around, I found that it was the best deal going. When I went back to eBay it was gone, and another was showing up at $180!
Then I saw the IRLinc and it looks good. However, I didn't want to pay about $130 for one (by the time it's shipped to Canada). I'm not sure I understand what you mean by requiring another X-10 controller, though.
What is the other ~$60 transceiver that you mentioned?

I recently also found out about the Insteon EZUIRT, which will work with X10. It's the most expensive of them all (~$130 - $140). However t does more than the others, so I think I may bite the bullet and get one - unless I can score an IR543 in the next couple of days. There would be no need to do all this if X-10 just went the extra mile with their NStinct remote. It's the best value universal remote, and picked up a coule at $20 or $30 when they were first launched. This will control IR devices, including macros, AND X-10 devices. However, you can't have a mixed IR/X-10 macro, which makes the remote kind of pointless IMO.

Hi fitbrit,

Even though I created this thread I keep forgetting to check it! (I just subscribed to this thread so I should get an e-mail when someone posts.) I have to run right now so I don't have time to explain why I think the Insteon needs an separate X10 controller and that other thing I found for about $60. But later on today I should have time and I'll explain both.

Cheers,
Gerry

OK, here's what I have so far.

The Insteon IR converter is available from Amazon for about $88:

http://www.amazon.com/Smarthome-2411R-Receiver-INSTEON-Converter/dp/B003IHTZFI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1351719156&sr=8-1&keywords=Insteon+ir

I downloaded its manual and when it talks about controling an X10 it says:

"1) Set IRLinc to Linking Mode by pressing & holding the Set button for 3 seconds.
The blue IRLinc Status LED will flash once

2)Using an X10 controller [my emphasis], send the X10 Primary Address you want to use three times
The blue IRLinc Status LED will begin blinking"

So it seems that you need a separate X10 comtroller to send a signal which the Insteon will see and then put itself into X10 mode with that Primary Address. I found a plain X10 controller for about $20 - not that expensive but of course adds to the cost.

The other device I found is called a Macro IR Module MM42IR and is availabe here:

http://www.smarthomeusa.com/ShopByManufacturer/Monterey-Instruments/Item/MMIR/

BUT . . . . . when I started to read its manual I was confuled about it saying that its supposed to plug into a "Two-Way Power Line Interface" and I was not sure if it came with it. Upon a little more reasearch for this post I found that the Two-Way Power Line Interface is a different item and ITS ALSO DISCONTINUED!!!!!

Boy the X10 people are really dumb to keep on discontinuing these items. I think there's an 800 number to call and I may do that.

In the mean time I'm still searching. If you do end up buying the Insteon please post your progress with it.

Thanks for the info!

I did some digging, and it seems that a better, more versatile PSC05 ("Two-Way Power Line Interface") equivalent is available here:
http://jvde.us/xtb/XTB-523_description.htm
http://jvde.us/xtb/XTB-523_description.htm
Doubles the cost of the macro thing, but may be worth it.

I also scored an ir543 as part of a much larger package of used X-10 stuff. Waiting for it to be shipped.

Hi fitbrit,

Thanks for the info.

Where were you able to get the used X10 stuff? eBay? If some other source could you give me some info on that source?

Thanks,
Gerry

Yes, of course. It was on X-10's own forums: http://forums.x10.com/index.php

In the Product wish list sub forum, I started a thread lamenting the demise of the IR543. One of the more prolific posters in that forum had seen another post where someone wanted to sell a boatload of stuff, including an IR543. I offered the guy $50 for the IR543, or $300 for a ton of other stuff as well (but not ALL of what he was selling). He took the latter. I am in the middle of buying up everything I need to automate the rest of the house, and so I got a lot of stuff, including spares, for that $300. COmpared to what he paid for it all originally, I think the seller was very happy. Compared to how much stuff costs new these days, I am very happy. Now I just have to figure out where I want it all shipped to.

Look what I just found:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/powerhouse-Command-Center-IR543-/200841672588?pt=Home_Automation_Controls_Touchscreens&hash=item2ec318b78c

No shipping to Canada, which is a pity.

Hi fitbrit,

Thanks for the info! I saw your thread on the other forum and I also saw the UR543 on eBay. Its got 5 days to go so I just put it on my watch list for now. I guess I'll just have to look out for one of these either new or used and just get it. The other alternatives seem to be more complicated than its worth!

I did bid on the one on eBay. I'll stop driving the price higher if you're interested in getting it, since I've got one coming. I wanted to get two, but I think I may have found another way to do things using iRule etc.

Hi fitbrit,

Haven't been here for a while. I saw 3 543's on eBay and put some low bids on them and they were all auto-bidded higher instantly. Frankly I wasn't too keen on spending too much for them when they were used and the new one was already at about $100.

Now I'm leaning to the Insteon controller which is $100 but if I want to use it with my X10 appliance module I need a separate X10 controller to help the Insteon learn an X10 command. Other option is to get an Insteon appliance controller but they are about $30. So I'm looking at at least $130 to control a Dell HTPC which in total cost me about $500. So I'm also not too keen on this solution either.

So for now I'm just manually plugging the AC in or out as needed. I'll still be looking for a more reasonably costing solution but the above may end up being my long term solution!!

Gerry, I'm in Canada, but my mother-in-law is headed to Florida in under three weeks. I have more X-10 controllers than I need, and I would be delighted to send one with her to ship off to you if you want. However, I'm a bit confused about what you're trying to achieve. What X-10 gear do you currently have, and in what way are you trying to control the HTPC? Just simply turn it on and off?

Any news on a way to control X10 via IR?

The problem with buying a used IR543 (aside from the high markup) is that the things only last 5 years or so. There's a good likelihood your replacement won't last long. The Smarthome-2411R-Receiver-INSTEON-Converter reportedly (amazon.com reviews) does not do X10 well.
My IR543 has failed on the powerline side - it receives IR (according to the LED) and thinks it is sending, yet the signal isn't making it to the high voltage side. I saw some troubleshooting info on the web, and replaced a few of the components to no avail.

If there's no X10 solution I'm thinking about putting my 3 X10Pro XPDFs from my theater on eBay to fund new Insteon devices. Has anyone else switched out their X10 IR theater lamp control with Insteon? I need to make sure whatever I get is compatible with my Harmony remote.

Someone above mentioned the EZUIRT. Not cheap so probably not what you are looking for, but it will do what you want. It can also be set up via software, so no controller needed to send X10 commands to set up.

I'll have to do more research if I go all Insteon, yet the EZUIRT is $145 with no X10 support, and the 2114R is $100 with poor X10 support. The 2114R sounds better but there's probably more to the story. I think if I go all Insteon I'll have no problem, short of the $300 it will cost me. redface.gif

The EZUIRT does indeed support X10 and is $130 on the SimpleHomeNet website. It's advertised as a replacement for the IR543.

CaRealtor - thanks for clarifying the X10 support. I read the bullet on SmartHome, "This device will not send out X10 commands" - they should reword that, I believe it means it won't send X10 via IR, but it appears it does IR -> X10 -> powerline. I believe I'll pick one up and report back. It'll also provide a backup to my IR distributor.

I got the EZUIRT and it works fine with my Harmony remote and X10 XPDF dimmer modules. The only thing I don't like about the EZUIRT is that it is set to housecode "C" by default and does not support a way to change that via the on-device programming. The Harmony remote software does not support the EZUIRT by name, however using the X10 IR543 device settings works just fine. I paid $130 delivered. I think my IR543 was $15 about 4 years ago, but the days of cheap X10 devices seems to be over.

I know its an old thread and lots of people have move away from x10 systems, but I thought maybe some are still using this stuff (I am) so I thought I would put this out there. I have a couple of IR543's. They are used and work fine. Looking at gettting $40 each plus shipping or $70 for the two. Send me a PM and maybe we can look at getting this done. Thanks

sorry, they went relatively fast as a person contacted me about 2 weeks later wanting both. Good luck in your hunt. If you have kijiji or equivalent for local selling, I have seen a number of x10 things "flow thru" there, you might get lucky.

Here's one on E-Bay, IR-543.

These have been discontinued for almost 4 years now, HA World is an X-10 dealer and since the new owner, Authinx, they will not be bringing this unit back into production. Your best bet is probably the Insteon 2411R, we sell them for $99.99 and they will control X-10 and Insteon devices directly with an IR remote.
