HI everyone.

I am looking at a way to monitor my garage door to check it's open state. My system is mostly X-10 and I really like it.

I hear alot about the DS10a wireless X-10 sensors and W800 wireless recievier. I have a computer on all the time so this should be good. Most of what I read about this setup is somewhat dated. Is this still a good option?

Scott

I would never recommend X10 for any "presence" operation, as messages are not guaranteed to be successful. The door may be open, and you may not know. I'd recommend upgrading a bit, get yourself an INSTEON Hub or PLM, and an INSTEON garage door kit. INSTEON is backwards compatible with X10, and it's a fully modern and digital home automation protocol.

Thx for the reply. I agree that INSTEON is a better, more modern system but all of these newer system come with a cost. From what I hear the X-10 wireless system is very reliable and updates every hour to confirm the status. The DS-10a wireless sensors can be had for $10 each so I can do other windows, doors etc. I do like the low cost.

I have had an X-10 system for years now and I am happy with what it does. 95% of the time it works without problems. With the wireless I hear it is a lot better.

I did look at the INSTEON and it may still be an option but it is hard to justify the added cost.

Thx again
Scott

Understood. Personally, I'm willing to pay a little more for piece of mind. I have 4 of the INSTEON garage door kits, and I never question whether it's in sync. If a door opens, the system knows, if it closes it knows that to, and its all triggered as-it-happens, not on a timer. That said, you are correct, most of the time X10 works just fine.

I use this combination along with HAL2000 (which would announce something like the garage door is open or door has been opened throughout house) and it works great. There have been several times late at night where we were "reminded" the garage door was still open.

Best of luck.
