I have an Elan G! system, an HC12 System Controller and an M86A Multi Zone controller, at the moment controlling media and electric blinds. It was set up by an installer, and I have no manuals, and I can see no way to make any changes to the system. Am I right that the intention is that the owner of the system should not be able to make changes, that I have to get the dealer to come back each and every time, or can I access software to do this myself?
Does anyone alter/maintain their own Elan system, is it fairly straight forward, what would be a good starting reference?
Companies that allow end-users to change their own programming code must either offer full support and good documentation and training on how to do everything to a long list of people who are completely clueless, or they must completely ignore people and not provide any support at all. The later category is far more common with DiY 'automation' systems. This is because people who want to DiY often want to do it inexpensively. Since support is very expensive, the two don't jive.
So, you end up with dealer-only supported systems which cost more, have greater stability, and are supported and maintained by dealers who have been trained on the software and hardware which has been installed. So, while you can ask your dealer, most won't support people who just want the software and may not legally be allowed to provide it. But, it doesn't hurt to ask.
