I am going to pull the trigger on either the LN52A550P or the LNT5265F

Price difference appears to be about $400 at this time. Placement will be a wall mount in MBR (mostly evening movies, etc.) and source will be Comcast HD. I am a big sports fan so I will watch a good bit of football, baseball, etc.

I have personally viewed the 5265F and a small worry is the glossy screen. The new set, the LB52A550, I have only reviewed web based content.

I would appreciate some sage advice. I can afford the $400. I am simply unsure of which way to go "overall" given the specs on the two sets, etc.

Thank you in advance.

Go Davidson

I currently have in my house the 5265F, and I will say the screen is about as shiny as the 85U plasma I had before it, meaning very shiny. I have yet to see definitive information regarding the A550, but on wednesday, I can compare and submit a response to you, if you can hold off. I will post pictures of comparisons and you will know then too. As far as specs go, the A550's response time is lowered to 5ms vs the 8ms on 65F. Not a big deal unless you are gaming. The Dynamic contrast is also broadened to 30,000:1 on the A550, up from 15:000 to 1. I do not know the native contrasts. Side buttons on the A550, as opposed to top on the 65F. Also, the A550 is advertising 1.3 HDMI, whereas the 65F does not, leading me to believe they are not 1.3 spec but does not rule that out. Samsung's site has to be the least informative of any site I have researched so far for their own products. The screen is so shiny on the 65F, I cannot see that being any worse for the A550. If it wasnt for dead pixels on a brand new set, I would be keeping the 65F, but I cannot exchange it at any BB in my area due to it's discontinuation. If you can get one at a good price, I would say go for it. The picture is really good, and I have had many sets to compare, like the Sharp 62 and 92U, a Sony W3000, and a Panny 85U plasma. Hope this helps.

a 65f vs. 550 would be a terrific comparison and i would appreciate it a lot! I guess i'm still considering the 65f, its just that i'm put off by the bait and switch thing samsung pulled off (switching processors to a supposedly inferior one)... seems the recent 65fs aren't as good as they were before... although the very latest firmware may make them better? don't know...

ANYWAYS that was a bit offtopic... but yeah a 65f vs. 550 would be great

As far as a firmware update, there are none available (or at least listed) for the 65F. I am assuming that the latest updates are already installed, and I do not have a reference list for software versions. I am hearing that Samsung prefers to be called and ship out update kits to owners..True? Anybody? And while I was near the set, again, I looked at the screen and could clearly make out reflections it was picking up. Might as well be glass.

How many bits in the panel 8 or 10? Is it really 5ms? Any noticeable blur in games on 360?

The 46" 650T is down to $2350 at Amazon already, so there's not a huge price difference between the sets. I wouldn't expect a huge difference in quality.

As my only available source of video was Fry's internal promotional channels, there was no method for comparison of the pulldowns. Even if a store employee stated that the source was 24P, (which I didn't ask) I wouldn't consider their word as a reliable source. You'd really need total access to both units and test various frame rates via various source inputs to do that kind of analysis.

Contrary to popular video purist myth, the 3:2 pull-down is mostly seamless anyway. I agree that the 5:5 is preferable conceptually, but if you asked me to pay a thousand bucks (or even a few hundred) for the difference, I wouldn't go for it.

i've been reading a lot about the 3:2 pull-down and the 5:5 pull-down. I see people mention it, but I have yet to see anyone describe what it actually is. I honestly have no idea what it means. How does a pull-down affect visual quality? I'm just stumped.

Can anyone point me in the right direction, or explain what it means?

You sure about your HDMI? My 4661 is HDMI 1.3, not sure why the 65 wouldn't be. Also, the 550 is 1.3.

Are you participating in the 65/61 series owner threads? There is a multitude of firmware updates, including a very recent update for the so called "inferior bate and switch" chips. Which, in reality, they are superior to the old chips with the updates. Samsung didn't bate and switch anything.

No, I am not sure about the HDMI...Thats why I said I did not know. Although, that is something simple that should be advertised.. Anyway, as far as FW updates, you guys are the experts. I took my 5265F out of the box last Tuesday and immediately noticed dead pixels, so I have not researched that. I have been spending most of the time looking for a new one, and got a killer deal on a 52A550. Being as it was brand new, again, I assume it is as up to date as possible, but that may be dreaming. I will be searching out that thread though for kicks and giggles, or for the one of the A550. Thanks again for all the input you people share!

How many dead pixels? If you don't like them, I would send it back. Samsung considers a certain amount of dead pixel normal and won't do anything about them until they get above a certain number. So, your best bet is to get it back before your time runs out. Sounds like that is your plan anyway.

Not sure on the bits of the panel...The 5265F performs pretty well with the 360, with so far no noticable smearing or pushing. Blurring is tolerable, albeit I think I have a very sensitive eye. Compared to what I have seen in previous tv's, it is the best.

Yes, it was my plan. Actually, it was 1 dead pixel, but almost in the middle of the screen, and out of the box. COnsidering I have had 5 lcd tv's previously, and none of them had any at all, that freaked me out. It is all working out, although BB is kinda sick of me, and frankly, I feel the same way. I hope i have better lluck with the 550A.

So are you saying the Samsung 65f and hence the a550 has better PQ than the Sony W3000 in you opinion?

I'd be interested in this info, too. This is my first HD set, I picked up a 46" Sunday from Circuit City (the only store in town with one in stock - they didn't even have one on the display floor yet.)

Personally, I plan on starting with the famous 1499 post settings that I use on my 4661 and going from there.

I have not yet seen my 52A550 yet, but the 5265F I own now is much better than my previous 52W3000 for motion blur. The Sony was a great set, but that darn motion blur gave me headaches.

Well, I cannot confirm the A550 until tomorrow, but from my experience and taste I like the picture on the Samsungs better overall, meaning in motion as well. The W3000 Sony was a great tv, but the motion blur was VERY bad to me. My wife was like, "whatever, that doesnt bother me". So, maybe it was my sensitive eye, or just my mind, I had to dump it. Otherwise, it would still be here. The guy who bought looked at the Sony when I had it listed for sale, bought it on the spot. On paper though, the specs of the Sony, and the Samsung were very close. The A550 however, is better in almost aspect (on paper of course) than the W3000. To sum it all up, YES. Overall.

Looks very nice .just had 20 minutes to look into the tv as i left for work.
first thought.
picture looks very good. Not getting WOW effect so far.it is good like any other lcd tv for this price .like lnt4661.
sound is much better then what i expected.
As per the screen.it looks like in between lnt4661 and lnt 4665.
not shiny like 65 at all.
need to play through the calibrations and will let you guys know.

After nearly a month with my 4065, I am trading it in for the 40A550, I work in an electronics store, got it with my discount and the store cost was actually 20$ less than the 4065. I really do love the 65, but heavy green on skin tones and blurring of nearly every SD broadcast made me long for a different TV. And with my luck, a replacement came out within my 30 Day Satisfaction return policy. It is coming in Friday afternoon. I am wicked excited. I have gotten a chance to fool around with the 46 we already have on display and have been very impressed. MMMuch richer blacks. They switched the menus to the 07' 87 series DLP menu. Not necessarily easier, but more asthetic. The swivel base is pretty firm compared to the 65. The 2 things I haven't been psyched about was the ugly-ass remote, and the greyish silver trim on the bottom. I felt they spent a little more time with the crome painted plastic on the sides of my 65. But after hearing the single bottom speaker, I was very impressed with the TV's own sound. As far as motion blur, we have a Sony demo we can play through our TVs via component to show the benefit of 120hz processing. and though it wasn't the crisp image you saw on the plasmas and 120hz sets, placing the Sony 40W3000 next to it was astonishing. The Sony looked like mashed potatoes compared to the samsung, and nearly blue blacks compared to the 30k contrast on the 550. My belief is that 4ms will become the industry standard this year, as I have already seen a truely remarkable Sharp 46SE94u with 4ms + 120hz and 27k contrast, removable bottom speaker, ultra thin bezel AQOUSLINK, and a HEFTY PRICETAG! Wish me luck!

Any reason I shouldn't trade in?!?

After owning a 50" 85U, I would stick with any lcd samsung has to offer. The picture was great on the 85U, but the green ghosting was atrociuos. Was noticable on Sd, HD, Blu Ray, 360. No plasma for me.

I can't seem to find a 550 around here..store had a Samsung a530..can't find any info on that anywhere..not on Samsung web site...in forums..on the web...one member in another thread stated it's the lesser model of the 550 and comes with a different style and doesn't have pics/etc via usb....anyone else here this?

If this is as close to the 550 as I can get here I may just buy it..but would be nice to have some specs on it. The 650 was there at the store but the power issues have me scared of that one......what is the BIT on this model, 8 or 10? I hope it has 120hz.

Thanks and enjoy your lcds!

On wednesday, the 26th I will. I will be comparing the 65F and the A550 with pics for those of you who have expressed interest. The other tv's are long gone.

My biggest concern is how is the off-axis viewing? WIth my 4665 you pretty much have to be dead centre or the set begins to washout or get brighter sides.
