There's your answer. Your cable box only outputs 1080i, not 1080p. So, you are looking at the input from your cable box to your tv. The tv will convert it to its native resolution, 1080p. If you have a PS3, you would see something like 1080p@60Hz or 1080p@24Hz, depending on that is your setting with your PS3.

Do you know how to set the TV to convert the resolution from 1080i to 1080p? I did not see anything in the manual regarding this subject matter.

nothing needs to be set on the tv, your LCD is a fixed resolution tv that only displays video at the tv's native resolution unlike CRTs. So everything on your tv regardless of how its output from the component will be displayed at 1080p

the salesguy is probably mistaken as there is no such thing as a 52" Z4100. he probably meant 52W4100. the Z4100 only come in 40" and 46".

hI All, I've been researching the hell out of the new V and W series in the 40inch, can not come to a decision, what makes it worse is I have a hookup at Sony and can get the 40 W4100 for 1360 and the V4100 for 1,060. I am hearing from my SOny contact that the W is a much better picture and is worth it, and is almost the same XBR5 from last year. Please someone make this decision for me.

I got my 40W4100 a week ago. I have it connected to a D* HR20-100dvr. I find the picture very sensitive depending on the channel tuned, and I find myself changing the settings every time I change the channel. The HD telecasts, especially on those channels transmitted in MPEG-4 format, surpassed my expectaions.
Any suggestions as to how best to calibrate the picture for a consistent output?

No, he was not talking about the W4100, which was the model I was looking at on the
display floor. I told him I read on the internet that there was not going to be a Z4100
in the 52 inch size, and he said there was, and that they have them on order.
How do you know there is not going to be a Z4100? More than one person on this
forum has stated that there isn't.

He also said that the W4100 has x.v. color, and the V4100 does not. He said the Z4100
will have a 10-bit display, and the W4100 has an 8-bit.

well both of the leaked sony roadmaps are showing no 52" Z, i would love if there was one as well. i take that over a sales manager, i worked at best buy all through college and managers are sometimes the least informed employees

I would be skeptical of your "contact's" claims. I had both side by side for a number of days and I couldn't tell any difference between the two. The only time you could notice a difference is if you turned Motionflow on high and CineMotion on Auto1 on the W4100 and I didn't care for that look one bit. Aside from that, if I could get the W4100 for $1360 I would have gotten it because of the light up Sony logo and the matte black bezel, also the W4100 adds tweeters. At last, I wasn't able to get the W4100 for that kind of money.. the best I could get it for was $1598 and a V4100 for $1249. I decided on the V4100.

That salesman is wrong. The W4100 doesn't and can't have x.v. color.

Can anyone confirm that the Z series has or does not have CCFL Backlighting? There seems to be a lot of confusion about it. If the Z's don't have CCFL, aside from the 10 bit panel, what justifies the $2300 vs $1900 price tag of the Z and W series respectively?

all sony tv's have CCFL backlighting except for the LED Xbr8. The V,W series have normal CCFL while the Z sports the WCG-CCFL.

First time poster - long time reader. I have went through each of the 16 pages of this listing, and wow - a whole lot of fluff, etc. I don't care about the sound so I will neglect this information from the posting.

I can only go on pulling it out of the box, giving you my setup, and my very first initial impressions...the gf wanted to snuggle and watch movies - so tweaking of tv was at a minimum.

Previous setup:

TV - 52" 1080 Hitachi Rear Projection

Setup:

TV- KDL-40W4100

DirecTV: HD DVR Receiver - HDMI to TV - TV gets a 1080i signal
Xbox360 w/HD DVD: Component to TV - TV gets 1080p signal

Video:

It was set to vivid...i cycled through it a couple times on some hd broadcasting, sd broadcasting, xbox....

I kind of like vivid, even though I have not messed with any settings.

(DirecTV)

The picture of HD programming watching ESPN was amazing, sometime I would have a slight blur with my Hitachi, but the Sony I didn't have anything with it.

SD programming was a WHOLE lot better than my previous TV. I didn't feel inclined to just stop watching SD all together. Like I have almost done in the past.

Issue: When my box(hd dvr) switches from a 480p signal to a 1080i or 720p - there is maybe a 10 second delay for a picture to appear. (sound comes through my stereo, and through tv fine. I see this being a major issue at times I like to surf channels.

Xbox360:

I only played a game of Halo 3 online. I left everything as it was picture wise...I really suck on this new tv, and everything appears "brand new" so I will have to adjust to that. You get major details on the loading screen when you are in the matchmaking lobby.

Movie on 360:

I have an HD-DVD setup with my 360. I watched Sin City. I believe i saw the TV say it was 480p...but in all honesty - it looked so legit I really believe the hd dvd upconverted it. Here is my issue on Sin City - you watch it and you know the green screen is all around the whole time. IT'S SO EWWW watching it. It appears that all the green screen crap is horrible fake - and you are watching actors as if they were on a stage.

I watched Bourne Supremecy & 300 on HD DVD for about 5 minutes a piece.

Amazing details...I'm liking the 24p thing on that kind of movie, and will have to adjust accordingly. 300 appears to move at twice the pace it did visually - everything is just so quick looking.

I have not turned off cinemotion, etc,

Appearance:

I love the design of the tv. I love the sony light up, I love the hole: I have it with a stand underneath it - you can only see the base stand.

Control:

It's okay - no backlighting that i noticed, and I won't even use it much longer as I have a Logitech 520 remote.

That's all for right now - If anyone needs anything I can get information later tonight as I get a full night of tweaking and checking the message boards.

Thanks!

Dre

Great review Dre. Any pictures of the TV/your setup would be great! I'll be purchasing the 52" model within the next few weeks.

If you suck on this TV and not the RPT it's probably because you got input lag. Probably due to it being set to Vivid. That's a lot of processing the TV is doing so it will slow gaming down a good bit. Also, it's OK to like vivid. I find that when someone comes from a RPT to an LCD the initial brightness and pop of the LCD compared to the RPT is really appealing. You'll probably get used to it after a while and then tone it down a bit. Enjoy your set!

Hey, I've looked at the Sony website and saw no mention of it - are the speakers detachable? Regardless of how good they are, I already have a small 5.1 setup I'll be hooking it to, and I won't need them at this time.

Thanks,

uke

Bigdog, Did you change the settings from cable to antenna? Unfortunately the newer TV's don't seem to have 2 RF inputs, one for cable and one for antenna. You therefore have to set up for one or the other... I am pretty sure that is your problem. Lew
