ok. Seems to me that most people use one or two HDMI inputs. I use one for the blu-ray player, one for the satellite receiver and occasionally i connect my laptop.

I use the KDL55XBR8 as an audio input selector. I have the optical output connected to an old Sony AVD-C70ES SACD/DVD receiver that doesn't have HDMI inputs. The four HDMI inputs are 1) Comcast X1 DVR, 2) Sony NSZ-GS8 Internet Player with Google TV, 3) Sony BDP-S550 Blu-Ray player and 4) Apple TV.

I just received word from ModusLink PTS to "Please enter your repair and return order using part# A1564793A. The part numbers on your board are incorrect. We see this a lot." I am going to submit my order and ship the board now.

Temporary substitute for KDL55XBR8 during FBU repair

My son loaned me a 32" LCD TV to use until I get the FBU board back and installed. This temporary measure is necessary since my wife and I are TV addicts. I thought that you might get a kick out of the photo below:

jehill,

I hope you get your XBR8 fixed because it was a great tv by Sony. The pic you posted makes me laugh by seeing how small the 32inch tv looks next to your XBR8.

Hi to everybody
I've been an XBR8 owner since almost day one. Bought it from a local Sony store here in Montreal. It was a demo unit, the last one in the region.
It's been very reliable and fun to watch.
My first issue was a bad LCD panel. Every second horizontal line was defective. It was discussed here in this thread. That was replaced under warranty.
Second issue was the vertical lines, I turned off DRC and all if fine.
Today, it doesn't want to turn on. Standby red led flashes 13 times. I disconnected the TV for 5 minutes, replugged it, while Green led is on I turned it on with the master On switch at the top of the set. It turned on and I was able to get a picture, all was fine. Other symptom my son just told me about, colour patches appears on the screen as if a magnet is close ! It's fine after a few minutes
Other
I then turned it off with the remote and it went back into standby and flash 13 times. I have disconnected it again and leaving it for a few hours.
In the mean time I found the servcie manul and 13 blink standby is either problem with Panel, fans, CB1 board, G6 or G7 board, FBU board.
I'd like to fix it myself. I do have good soldering skill (assembled a audio Amp and Vacuum tube Pre-amp in the last few winters)

Does anybody have experience with this problem or input as to what to concentrated on at first?

Thanks

Danny

I just looked at my service manual and see that it doesn't list the G7 board for 13 blinks. It lists the LCD Panel, Cooling Fan (there are two), CB1 Board, G6 Board and FBU board. I would start by reviewing my posts starting on p-183. My second post includes a photo of the set with the rear cover removed. Here you can see all of the components listed. The LCD Panel is the chassis that all of the other components are attached to. The CB1 board is between the two fans. It has a heat sink attached to it. The G6 board is the third board from the left in the bottom row and is next to the FBU board one the end. The FBU board is enclosed in a metal shield. The only way that you and I have of checking the boards is to replace them one at a time and see if that eliminates the problem. All of the boards you need, except for the FBU board, are available at www.tristatemodule.com. Once at that site, search for kdl55xbr8 and they will appear. Your current issue appears to be power supply related, so I would try replacing the G6 board first. If it's not the problem, you can return the board and get 80% of your money back (there is a 20% re-stocking fee).

Changing the LCD Panel is a huge project. Everything attached to it (the chassis) except the TCON board (just above the CB1 board) has to be removed. Are you sure this is what was done to solve your first problem, every 2nd line missing? Was the set removed from your house when this was done?

Jehill,

The LCD panel was replaced in my living room. I was there when they did it.
That was in response to the horizontal line problem. When the tech showed up the first time he said right away that it needed a new panel. It was ordered and a week later he came to the house to replace it.

Thanks for the link, i'll go have a look right away.

Danny

That's bad news for the rest of us with KDL55XBR8's and the same symptoms, especially in light of the following exchange I had with ModusLink PTS:

3rd Oct 2014 @ 1:50 PM
I Said:
Did the technician(s) that checked out my FBU board initially observe every third line missing or were all lines there (indicating that source of the issue isn’t the FBU board)?

3rd Oct 2014 @ 4:04 PM
ModusLink PTS, Inc. Said:
Hello John,
It is still on the floor with the techs. From their notes they put it into the set and it is running good but they are going to let it run all day and see if they can duplicate your problem. Hope to have more information for you on Monday. Thank you

In other words, my FBU board works fine when it is connected to another LCD panel.

Jehill,

That is bad news.
Are panel for the XBR8 still available, either new or refurbished?
I'm opening mine up today

They may be available, but are the sources reliable? Is the cost prohibitive?

Here are the part numbers: Sony A15681368A
Samsung LTY550HF01-002

Well the TV doesn't want to turn on anymore. The green led turns on, the Sony logo turns on, the after a few seconds, the relay inside click off. We then push the On/Off button on the set and turns on for a few seconds again and turn off again. Then everything is dead until I disconnect the AC cord.

So I call Sony Service Canada this morning. They see that the LCD panel has been changed. They conclude the panel is again defective and ask me to supply photos of the set and tell me they'll assist me in buying a new TV.
So the pics have been submitted and they should send me an offer by email. Like others have experienced before, they won't repair it and they want me to buy another Sony.

I've alway bought High end XBR since the first XBR generation. So hopefully they'll offer me a great deal on a new XBR

My KDL55XBR8 did the exact same thing when I left the LVDS cable that runs from the FBU board to the CB1 board disconnected. If you disconnected anything, connect it again and the set should come on.

I've checked all connections twice. Nothing.
Right now i'll wait for the offer from Sony Canada. They better offer something good. The XBR8 had a better picture over the newer Sony in my bedroom, hands down.
Might be the time to upgrade (difficult to do from an XBR8) to a larger set and get more Internet connectivity in the living room.

I had another message exchange with ModusLink PTS today:

7th Oct 2014 @ 9:25 AM
You Said:
Did the symptoms ever appear? What parts have been replaced? When will the board be shipped back to me?

7th Oct 2014 @ 12:36 PM
ModusLink PTS, Inc. Said:
Hello John,
It does show that we finally got it to fail. According to the tech's notes they replaced some connectors and hdmi's. It is in the shipping dept now and will be shipped out today. You will be updated with a tracking number later today or tomorrow . Thank you

I'm not sure what to make of this. Did it fail so that every third line is missing? What did they do about it?

I am happy that they replaced the two HDMI jacks that I damaged. We're not going to know if their repairs restored normal operation until I have installed the board in my set and checked it out.

I don't know what to make of the repair comment either. .Did you write the full details of the defect on your packing list or repair tag?

I wonder if the defect is in the panel. You will find out one way or the other pretty soon.

If they got the board to fail, I would assume that it failed such that every 3rd line was missing. Ether that or the got their LCD panel to fail. As you say, I'll find out one way or the other soon enough. The board is expected to be delivered by end of day Thursday. My wife and I will be baby sitting, so it won't get installed until Friday.

Regarding the XBR55X850B available at Best Buy, it's available from Sony for the same price. See http://store.sony.com/54.6-diag-x850...m%3DXBR55X850B

If you contact Sony and complain about your expensive KDL55XBR8 failing, you can probably get an additional $500 off.

Every third line still missing!

I received the "repaired" FBU board yesterday and installed it today. Apparently, all they did other than obseve operation was replace the two HDMI jacks that I damaged, because the set still has the same symptoms: every third line of video is missing and there is vertical smearing. Apparently, DC restoration is a LCD panel function. That's what is causing the vertical smearing. Now what I have to do is decide what model to replace my KDL55XBR8 with, because the picture is now unacceptable to me.

Here are a couple of photos after the FBU board was reinstalled:

Too bad it appears to be a panel defect. What price area and brand are you going to look at this time?

I would go to Best Buy (or whatever) and take a look at the picture quality of various TV sets that you have in mind. The various TV sets that have threads on AVS are kind of interesting to read. I would probably buy local given that it easy to return a TV local if there are problems with the unit that you purchase.

Just wondering how many years did you get out of your TV before you have problems? I almost never purchase service plans for nearly anything, including my present KDL55NX720.. Are you going to purchase an extended service plan this time?

I got 5.5 years out of the set. No, I will not purchase a service plan. This morning I pulled the trigger on a KDL60W850B.

The TV that you selected seems to be in the price / feature area that I like. Did you purchase local, or on line?

I made the purchase online from Sony with the assistance of a Sony parts person who was able to get me an additional $75 discount. The larger $500 additional discounts only apply to clearance items, which the KDL60W850B is not. For more information on the set, go to http://store.sony.com/60-diag-w850b-...pfm%3Dcategory.

XBR8 LCD Panel is dying rapidly

Our KDL60W850B is scheduled to be delivered Monday. Meanwhile, we are still using the XBR8. My wife keeps telling me that, "The picture looks fine". I keep telling hear that, "No it doesn't!". Last night we were watching TV and I noticed that the black lines on the right side of the screen appeared wider.

Remember when I explained that every 6th line was dark on the right and normal on the left? A close inspection of Photo 1 below reveals that this phenomenon is superimposed with every third line missing phenomenon, but offset by one line. The result is that every 6 lines one line is dark and one line is missing, making it appear that two adjacent lines are missing. I am wondering how long it will be before no lines appear?

Photo 2 highlights vertical smearing on my BD menu. When the menu is brought up initially, white icons appear on a dark blue background and no smearing appears. However, if you sit and watch the display, the smearing gradually appears. Smearing only occurs on bright stationary objects, such as channel logos. The Hallmark Channel is a great example.

Happy with KDL60W850B

I am happy with the KDL60W850B that I purchased from Sony for $1424.99. I can't afford to spend thousands of dollars for a new TV every 5 years.
