I am looking to purchase a new 46" flat panel LCD TV for my living room. I am stuck between the Samsung LN46A750 and the Sony KDL-46XBR6. Both seem like great TVs, but I am not sure which one is best for me.

What I will be using this TV for is sports, connection to a media center, Blu-ray, and slight PS3 and 360 usage.

The one issue I have heard about the A750 is its halo effect. Is it that bad of a problem? Is it worth the extra money to get the A750 when the A650 has the same PQ and no halo effect, but 12-bit video processing compared to the A750's 16-bit video processing? Thanks.

Please do not limit this to ONLY gaming. This TV will not be used excessively for gaming. I will edit my original post to make sure that is understood.

Are you referring to the halo effect, or something else?

you seem to not know much, the halo effect is caused by a DESIGN FLAW. samsung admits it but cant do nothing about it now.. its too late i guess lol if u like a tv with light leaking to its frame.. go ahead LOL the a650 is just as awesome..

np mate, its the exact same tv just like the new 850 is the same as the a750 and yet again the same tv as the a650, my people at best buy say the same to so u know if THEY say that then its probably true, not that i didnt know to begin with.. cuz usually with the much higher price of the a850 they would try to sell u that one lol but no they tell u its the same tv just slimmer ..

but the a750 in general, no thanks any a750 owner probably noticed it and if not now, sooner or later it will become obvious, its whether they can live with that DESIGN FLAW or not thats the question... to each his own

Samsung is the king of hdtvs baby, gotta love it

Yeah, I will probably end up going with the A650 now. I hear people say that the halo effect depends on where your light source is (behind the TV = bad) and that you can get the bezel replaced by Samsung, but I don't think it is worth having to worry about.

Vex,
If you are looking for a 46inch I just purchased the A630 samsung
on sale, they wanted 400 dollars more for the 650 series, basically no differance This is a great LCD
for the price I paid, 120hz, really has decent sound also, I think it is awsome, I did a lot of research, passed up the bravia's also,
I must be missing something, I think the gaming is good also..can't wait to watch the packers today.... what are they asking for the 650?
if you can get the 630 for lower I would do it.. It drove me nuts
for 8 months trying to decide, This forum helped in my decision A lot..
Good luck with what ever you decide

Great purchase m8 but if you could have droped another 400 you should have done it the A650 does have a few features the a630 doesnt.. but 120hz is sure awesome and im sure ur enjoying it

The ultra clear panel is awesome aswell, if you read the A550 thread, it uses the mate panel like the A630, now there is a new model, the A580 which is the same tv as the A550 but with the ultra clear panel, people claim theres a night and day difference between the A550 and the A580 just because of the ultra clear panel!

same case here, the a630 has a mate screen where the a650 has the ultra clear panel, i saw the a630 in person at best buy, aswell the a650 a few tvs next to it.. the ultra clear panel does make colors look better and makes the image more contrasty.. gotta love it

Go with the A650, PQ is better. The Sony XBR6 looks cheap with that clear plastic and suspended speaker bar and the PQ is okay...but not that impressive.

Get the 650 or 750, The current lineup of Sony panels is just not impressing me this year, no where near the quality of the higher end Samsung offerings.

I'd say the 650 looks like crap as well.

Before you listen to this person's opinion, check both those sets out and see for yourself.

There WAS a design flaw with the bezel, it has been fixed. My 750 has no lit up bezel, even on a white screen in a dark room, september 2008 build.

No halo

Can you tell me if you got your set from Amazon? I want to get it, but I want to make sure the build I get has the Halo fix. Thanks.

Misinformation.

The plastic is no longer cut on a 45 degree angle. There is no Halo effect anymore.

Those that were early adopters of the 750s, and complained about it, received a visit from a Samsung technician, and had their bezels replaced.

You can download it but then you can't use Live.

Honestly, I can't see how anyone would pay 700 bucks more for the XBR6, unless you get Sony profit sharing or something. I can see buying the W or Z4100 of course, or the XBR8 if you got money to burn.

650 owners don't use game mode, they use HDMI labeled as PC, or VGA input, to avoid lag and have adjustable settings.

Well then you should see an optimologist because you have issues with your eyes.

The XBR6 is overpriced, looks poorly constructed with its cheap clear plastic holding the suspended worthless speaker bar that produces nothing but poor quality sound. Plus there is issues with color smearing. PQ on the XBR6 is also marginal.

The A650-A850 are the best you can buy hands down. The A950 is expensive, but very nice.

I've a September build 52A750 with no halo too. My first unit (July 08 build) did show some leakage but I wasn't bothered by it. That unit failed after a month and was replaced within 3 days (FutureShop, Canada).

The A650 and A750 are fantastic screens. The 750 series has a different bezel design, built-in subwoofers and a few other minor tech advantages over the 650 (its a later design) but the PQ is similarly stunning on both. It's immersive.

I was never comparing the PQ in the first place. I was referring to the design.
Maybe your right about the PQ, however, I don't see anything wrong with the suspended speaker bar. The speakers on the XBR6 are actually pretty good but not impressive.

The "halo" effect has been fixed on the 750, so the 650/750/850 models are you're best choice. The SCP is what seperates the Sammy's from the Sony's. The 16-bit VP on the 750 is a little overstated because of the extra DNLA features which does require more HP, so PQ wise, the 650/750 are about the same when calibrated properly, which of course, IMO, have no equal.

Lot of people were complaining about frame "CRACKING" in Sammy's A750 , it still have same problems ?

PS: After a couple of days, I noticed a "crack" in the top of the frame in the red touch of color area! (It does not affect the screen or viewing area at all . . . it is in the top of the frame) About 3 days later, another "crack" on the side of the touch of color. Another day or two, another "crack". It is like the color is "separating", or as if, the color was laminated inside the glass, and is separating. I don't know how to explain it exactly, but PLEASE, if you own this set, please examine the touch of color frame, and let me know if you are seeing the same problem. I think the touch of color is beautiful and I love the "frame" look of the screen, but if the color is going to start cracking, it is not going to look very nice in our living room!!! I have contacted the store and Samsung, and am considering a different model! Does anyone have the same problem, or should I try another one and see if it does the same thing??
