Unfortunately, this can happen with ANY make/model. It really depends on the individual panel you happen to get. Some are better than others amongst the same, exact batch.
It seems like whenever I get in the market for a TV there is a whole new generation of issues that people have to deal with. So annoying.

Anyway...@ OP: It all comes down to personal preference. FWIW, you're looking at the top 2 companies for LCDs, IMHO. You can't really go wrong either way.
I briefly hooked up my 360 to my Sony 52W4100 and it looked phenomenal. I played a little bit of TF2 and it was suh-weet. [No input lag, that I could tell.]
Even played the 'Meet The Soldier' video for my wife and her jaw was on the floor. Talk about eye candy.
